How to tell if lintels were fitted

Don't forget, Bri, that the window is already removed and thus removing headers is not always necessary as there may well be enough room to 'slide' in the 'L' shaped steel under the headers in the 'groove' mentioned above if there is sufficient room in the cavity to manoeuvre.
Russif you think peoples advice is helpfull please take the time to clicking the thank you button it gives great satisfaction0 -
Very true - just a little less fresh mortar than a complete 'rip out' and if you're really lucky the bricks would stay in place resulting in only mortar in the bottom course..... but we're into VERY lucky territory there

Rus, that was the issue I saw so there would have been evidence.
6 inch of brickwork would have had to be removed from at least 1 end and probably both, every time I've tried that the unsupported bricks have dropped whether I wanted them out or not.
Maybe the original support was OK, I think that's the bigger concern, if you can't see new lintel installation how can you be sure they have done it correctly.
I'd still like to know if this is single or double storey?
Have the windows come out yet, I didn't read that into it?I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.
Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)
Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed0 -

Though it had a loft conversion some time ago so now looks more like a challet.cyclonebri1 wrote: »Have the windows come out yet, I didn't read that into it?0 -
Curved bays on my bungalow don't have lintels above the windows themselves just across the opening where the bay window extends from. Our roof rafters are supported on the wall above the bay opening and extend to beyond the bay windows. So there might not be a need for support with you bays either (other than to stop non-load bearing bits falling down obviously). Lintels here are all timber ones.0

Ok, so they were back today.
Different guys, though.
Me: Out of interest, do you know if the lintels were needed in the end last week?
Him: I don't know. it's not always easy to tell.
...
Him: All done. Need to phone through to head office to make payment.
<ring ring>
Him: So total is £x, ok?
Me: That includes the lintels, which we still don't know if they were used or not.
Him: Well I'll have to phone my boss, the people at head office won't know.
...
Him: No, they didn't need the lintels. We'll take the £1800 you were charged for them off the bill.
Me: Thank you very much!
Glad I asked, now! I wonder how many people end up paying for stuff like this without receiving it.
Thanks for your help on here, guys. I know we didn't get a definitive answer on here, and I would have asked them anyway, but it gave me the confidence to be pretty certain they weren't used.0 -

did you get a reason why they weren't needed?!
was it, "there was already a decent lintel in place and we were happy that there was sufficient support"
or was it "we wanted to get away sharpish and the lintels would have been a pain to do on a friday afternoon"This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0
