What's it about?

Our 10-day MSE #BigWinterSwitch Event is a collective switch - that's where a 'trusted intermediary' (such as a council or us) runs an auction for energy firms to provide special tariffs for its members.

As we're so big, we're proud that unlike many collective switches our winners are cheaper for most than the best in the open market.

Go quick if you want to do it

The collective switch ends at 5pm today, or 10am Monday if you're a prepay customer. Click on the link or Martin above to go to the Big Winter Switch page.

How many have switched so far?

A staggering 56,000 have switched with the Big Winter Switch so far. We're extremely proud to have helped so many people save and we'd love to see how much it's saved you.

Show us your savings!

So please show us...

If you can screenshot your saving (with any personal info blanked out) we'd love to see it.

If not, just let us know how much you saved, either here on the Forum or on the #BigWinterSwitch Twitter hashtag.

Forgot to screenshot it, but (hopefully) £160/year saved on my 1-bed elec-only flat by switching to e-on! Thanks MSE :)

(not to mention the cashback and points)

ETA: I screened it, but I'm not allowed to add photos/links yet apparently.

Unfortunately, the Cheap Energy Club comparison tool is fatally flawed for anybody that is already on a fixed-term tariff.

I saw that I had a projected saving of £211 a year on my present npower tariff, fixed till Aug 15, so I looked at the figures. But they didn't make sense, so I did the sums myself.

Instead of saving over £17.50 a month as claimed, I would in fact only have been saving £6 a month. The reason for this is that, if you are on a fixed tariff, the tool makes the assumption that, after the fix ends, you will accept being put onto you current provider's 'standard tariff'. This makes an enormous difference and distorts the result completely. However, as we are obviously all MoneySavers, none of us will do that and we will use a comparison tool when the fix ends and select a better tariff, quite possibly even cheaper than the current 'cheapest' tariff.

To produce an effective comparison, the tool should compare your current monthly rate with the current monthly rate of other tariffs. It is pointless using an invented figure for future months to produce a valid comparison at this point in time.

In the meantime, I will stick with my spreadsheet for a realistic idea of any savings.

I agree entirely with Biggles, and there are plenty of similar observations from people finding claims of savings illogical when they looked closer and saw a higher tariff than their current supply.

In addition the basis deal of the MSE collective tariff has been superseded as the cheapest available.

I unsubscribed from the CEC, but that didn't stop me receiving the next email repeating the by now out of date claim that MSE's deal was cheaper than the cheapest, and by far the cheapest.

I wonder MSE's keenness has slightly blurred its objectivity for a few days.

As well as all of that, I was looking on behalf of someone who qualifies for the Warm Home Discount scheme with the current supplier, but would not under E.on's different terms. So that makes it a non-runner anyway for some.

Yes it's a joke on my parents large house. Says they could save well over £400!

When I worked it out it was closer to a £50 saving and even that was debatable.
  • The savings announced by MSE from its collective switch will be hopelessly over-stated as anyone who understands the effect of standard tariff prices on how savings are displayed will know.

Energyhelpline has the option to view savings without the weighting of moving to standard tariffs being added.

On Twitter, Martin Lewis claims Ofgem is stopping CEC displaying prices in a more transparent way, like Energyhelpline does.

Comparison sites will be able to see from customers' tariff history if they have not been on standard tariffs for years and years - absolutely no excuse for any of them not giving the same price comparison option as Energyhelpline.

Of course standard tariffs are where the competition should be, not on gimmick short term tariffs with irrelevant points. There is no competition on standard prices because there is no price transparency and on that front commercial switching websites are the main movers for their own profit.

MSE expected £11 profit per switch, plus moneysupermarket.com made money too presumably.

CEC says £241 per annum -my spreadsheet says £70 per year after taking account of penalties, loss of online discounts....and the use of standard tariff in the calculation for post April when my current fix ends!!

Ive switched as per post 3, yes I know CEC might not be 100% perfect, but how do you unless you are a real expert. The 1500 Tesco points & £30 cashback are worth £45, arnt they, the exit fees are only £10 anyway, seems like a no brainer to me.
