BT sales call >>> pressure selling

BT call at 20:30 in the evening, "Your contract is drawing to an end. If you renew it now you will get BT Sport free of charge otherwise we will charge you £6.75 a month."

My reply, "Ok I'll cancel it now."

BT cancellations, "But why cancel it now when the contract doesn't end until February."

My reply, "Well, a very aggressive saleslady 'phones me at 20:30 in the evening urging me to renew my contract or else. Please just cancel it".

BT: If you read this, the high pressure sales technique does not wash with me.

  • Well said Sterlingtimes. BT seem to think people will bend over for them and just take whatever deal is offered.

    Personally, I tell them where to go or rather where I was going. Another provider.

    If you are in contract till February then isn't cancelling now cutting off your nose etc?

    You will have to pay up to Feb even though you won't get the service.

    Do you really think that's a wise response to a simple sales call?

    Just politely refuse any offer and put the phone down, why be belligerent about it? Leave come February and take up another provider's offers.
  • To me this sounds like a standard sales call and not pressure selling unless you are missing something massively out of your post.

    Just an FYI - people can only 'sell' to you is you engage with them. I would say that as soon as you realise that someone is selling to you all you need say is "I don't wish to discuss this, please don't call me again" to every attempt they make. It isn't rude and it will work.

    We have an issue in this country - we can be too polite. Don't engage and they can't sell to you. Make sure you state to them not to call you again - otherwise they will. Don't end the call with "thanks for calling" or similar as this is classed as a soft rejection and they will call again.

    I don't think the OP of this thread has the problem of being "too polite". He responded to the call by cancelling the service!:eek:
  • Essentially, they telephone you months before the end of the contract and urge you to renew the contract immediately. It's a "double-glazing" sales technique. Take it today or suffer the consequences. The BT appointed telesales person (mine had a US accent) wants an answer there and then.


    I was then threatened that if I did keep BT Sports and did not commit to another 12 months then I would automatically be charged £6.75 per month after 18 February.


    I was also told by BT that if I cancelled BT Sport now but 'phoned near to 18 February, I would be in a strong position to secure better terms to recommit for 12 months.


    I prefer to get rid of the football and get a lower price for the service.


    Football haters should be compensated. Otherwise football haters cross subsidise football lovers.

    In September BT wrote to me saying they will increase my charges from 1st December.
    Having taken the trouble to read their conditions I knew that I had the right to cancel the contract if they put up their charges.
    While they agreed with Ofcom, that cancellation on notification of increased charges without penalty was acceptable, they don't mention it in their letter. Other companies do.
    Another sneaky thing they do is, try to negotiate a new deal, to try to stop you from leaving, if you fall for this, you are instantly within minutes, placed on a new contract – this enable them to get round the Distance Selling Directive, where normally you have a few days to consider the new deal and reject it, it you feel you have been pressured or conned.
    Take care, they are greedy people.

    I did cancel BT Sports as I said. I did not cancel the telephone/broadband package.


    In essence, I am very pleased very with their service but unpleased with their selling approach.
