I had the same issue a few months ago. Messed about a few times with it and eventually I fixed it!!!!!

From memory this is what I did. First connect your Nexus to your laptop. Then

    1. Download Wugfresh Nexus Root Tool kit http://www.wugfresh.com/nrt/

    2. Go through the initial set up and make sure you have the required drivers installed

    3. Click on unlock and follow the instruction to unlock the boot loader. This will wipe your Nexus.

    4. Click Flash to Stock and Un-root and follow the instructions. This should then take you back to factory settings.

It might then take a while to re-boot but mine eventually came back to life. If you do get it working again first check it is showing the correct amount of storage before installing your apps again. Mine was showing only 8Gb when it's a 32Gb device. If it's not showing the correct storage do a hard reset and it should then show the correct storage.

It took me a bit of persevering as the connection between the Nexus and laptop kept dropping.

Hope this helps and good luck!

The added problem is that even before this issue - my nexus was never recognised by my PC - which never bothered me until now !!

You can get the drivers via http://developer.android.com/sdk/win-usb.html or the Wugfresh toolkit - http://www.wugfresh.com/nrt/ has a section giving various options for getting working ADB drivers which work fine for normal media access to (at least they do for me).

TBH though judging by the number of misfortunes you seem to hit you may be better advised digging a big hole and burying every technological gadget you have then selling up and moving into a cave. If you do please don't be tempted by gadgets such as fag lighters - stick to rubbing sticks together. Flint and steel may be safe too although it could be a bit hi-tech.

    Rooting usually voids warranty .

I had the USB de!!!!!! turned off on mine too, but if you go through and install the drivers it will eventually work. As I said, it kept dropping the connection but you just need to get the timing right and it should work.

You don't need to root it to install the drivers on the PC.

Even if you have rooted it the toolkit provides the tools to unroot it back to stock and locked.

Rather than kwikbreaks suggestion (due to warranty still running)
    I tried http://www.asus.com/support/Knowledge-Detail/28/2/Nexus_7/D53452AE-143C-42F1-BDC1-7F168085F0D7/
    and guess what ?
No sign of the device in the device manager at all - so I am assuming that it is totally dead.
The weird thing is that when plugged into PC via USB - It still indicates that it is being charged !!!
Hugo15 - when you say "USB turned off" - I am assuming that you mean on the device itself ?
I cannot switch mine on - the device will not boot up !!

    No USB connection .
Usual replies are one install the USB drivers from the manufacturer .
Two change the USB cable .
Three use a main board USB port not usb extension.
Four clean USB ports / wiggle USB cable .
Five delete USB drivers from device manager using USBdeview .

Factory Reset .( if this is not possible nothing much you can do )

    1. If your tablet is on, turn it off.
    2. Press and hold the Volume Down button, then press and hold the Power button at the same time until the tablet turns on. You'll see the word "Start" with an arrow around it.
    3. Press the Volume Down button twice to highlight "Recovery mode".
    4. Press the Power button to start Recovery mode. You'll see an image of an Android robot with a red exclamation mark and the words "No command."
    5. While holding down the Power button, press the Volume Up button.
    6. Use the volume buttons to scroll to "wipe data/factory reset," then press the Power button to select it.
    7. Scroll down to "Yes - erase all user data," then press the Power button to select it.

Yes, on the devices. You should still be able to install the drivers to your laptop and un lock the boatloader.

Quite why would installing the correct drivers on your PC have any impact on the warranty?

As it isn't registering at all on the PC (assuming you've looked properly) then probably the drivers wouldn't help anyway as I'd expect it to at least give a code 10 can't start if you didn't have the drivers. Normally they'd download and install automatically as it's only the ADB drivers that need a manual install.

That leaves my alternate suggestion. I'd suggest a pickaxe and spade would be good for digging the hole although there's probably an MSE board you can ask about that.
