Pet Plan are quoting £16.65 for the level of cover we had previously with our boy and £11.49 for a similar level to Argos.

    For £5 IMHO a no-brainer .... PetPlan

You Argos premium will rise by that probably at 1st renewal!

Viv - 3000 cover is quite low but better than no cover at all.

Check PetPlan, not sure where you live but my daughter "up North" pays £12.50 per cat with PetPlan, myself in London I pay £25.00 per cat with PetPlan too.

    Cover is 7000 per year.

Whatever you do, you want a "for life" and not "per condition" or "12 months" cover.

    Hmm. Something to ponder

PetPlan then. Small difference BUT in case you ever need to claim, remember that Argos will jump up sky high.

Also, PetPlan covers dental - Argos does not.

    Teddy's (8yo) dental was almost £800 and Fred's just over £400 (4yo).

Do quotes on More Than and John Lewis too. They're the two that are best-rated for customer satisfaction and we found them cheaper than PetPlan.
I found this too - Pet Plan's £8000 cover was over 50% more expensive than the best More Than policy, and while I've heard lots of good things about Pet Plan, I decided that More Than was much better value - more cover, for less money.

I found this site useful to compare the different policies

We use petplan, we first came across them about 15yrs ago, when we had our last dog, we had never insured any of the dogs before, but this was when insurance came to the forefront.

Our last dog, - male - pedigree - springer spaniel,

Couple of small claims for grass seeds in his paw, then when he was 9 yrs old, he had an accident, he got stuck between an outbuilding and a fence, when he turned around, it transpired he had damaged his spine,

1st port of call our vets - her 1st question are you insured - yes - ok, good you need to take him to a private animal hospital.

Got there - he had a partial mri scan, - showed he had fractured his spine, the fractured piece had crumbled into his spinal cord.

It was touch and go, it could have gone either way, - 3 weeks later we had to take him back to the animal hospital for a check up and review.

(he had regained 95% mobility, - but he wasn't allowed to run, to climb stairs, climb onto furniture) - this is a spaniel....

Our bill - £2k, we only paid £60 excess.

Did our policy go up bigtime - NO - just a £5 or so increase......

With the injury he had it was likely that the same thing could happen again, we checked with petplan and we then found out we were covered for "whole life", even if it happened 20 times we'd be covered.

We lost him at 14yrs, - we had a claim for cancelling a holiday - we couldnt have gone, we'd just lost him and was devastated.

Fast forward - we have another spaniel, pedigree male - still with pet plan, I pay £48 per month, (top cover), and while we haven't had to make a claim, - should we need private treatment, we can have it, without worrying whether its going to run into how many thousands.

My cat is with petplan, as a kitten she broke her right front leg, she needed surgery to pin the bone in place with an internal metal plate, she had to have some physio as well she to some nerve damage, this cost in total £4500. The next year our premium did increase by under £5 per month which I still think was very reasonable, her premiums are now at a level they would be had we never made a claim (I often check at renewal time), our vet accept direct payment from petplan which made things much easier for us. If we hadn't been insured she would have had to have her leg amputated, this would still have cost around £2000 and would have been more likely to cause future problems rather than a 'repair'.
  • I had experience about Pet Plan. I think their service is not so bad.

My vets now charge a £25 admin fee for any direct claim except for Pet Plan - I know others will only do direct claims with them and no others, too. I think that says a lot for the reputation/service within the industry. Well worth checking the policy at your own practice (and perhaps some of your local specialists - hopefully you won't need them, but useful to know ahead of time)
