Argos Insurance or PetPlan

Our previous cat was insured with Pet Plan at around £25 a month, just had a quote for our new cat at under £9 a month on Platinum cover.

Has anybody had experience of both companies, how are they to deal with for claims?

Pet Plan have finally paid up for previous cat's death cover (we're giving that back to Cat's Protection) but it took about 6 weeks. Wouldn't want to have to deal with an ongoing claim for something complicated and expensive if that's their normal timescales.

Do quotes on More Than and John Lewis too. They're the two that are best-rated for customer satisfaction and we found them cheaper than PetPlan.

More Than were slightly cheaper than John Lewis for us. We went with their top product (Premier) as it's the only one they do that's lifetime rather than annual, and with a per-year rather than per-condition payout limit.

I was happy to pay a few pounds more a month (and that's all it was) over some of the cheap companies for a company with good reviews for claims, for exactly the reason you said. :)

Also getting £30 cashback from Quidco. :D

How much have PetPlan quoted for your new cat?

Otherwise it's really hard to try to compare like for like

TBH I found PP settled claims really quickly - and I would say if they asked for further info / took time to pay out then generally it wouldn't have been much quicker elsewhere as they are generally regarded as the best

They also won't shoot premiums up year on year - even if you do end up claiming - something that most of the other insurers (incl Ar*gos) have been known to do!

Have a look at the Co*op - underwritten by the same company as PP but generally a little cheaper as you're not paying for the 'name' and their cover is slightly less but should be fine for most

I have Argos ins and couldn't fault them BUT that said my vet deals direct with petplan so the £1k + operation that the dog needed would have been paid direct.

Haven't yet asked for a quote. He was a 5 year old boy, she's a 2 year old girl both domestic moggys other than that all circumstances are unchanged.

Edit, should say the Platinum quote under £9 was with Argos.

PP didn't ask for further info, they just took 3 weeks acknowledging the claim, then another 3 weeks to pay.

  • I'd do a quote with PP for your.new cat & see what it is - you can't assume different cats will be the same price - for starters they're different sexes & yes!

See what PP quote as a starting base before looking elsewhere as you need.a base figure to work from
I know people whose pris.have risen.loads.with Argos &;others when tjeuve had to cla - PP wont do that so usually worth paying a couple of £s More

Pet Plan are quoting £16.65 for the level of cover we had previously with our boy and £11.49 for a similar level to Argos.

    Hmm. Something to ponder

I have only recently had a Cat and I am yet to insure her she is 1 year old and after a recent visit to the vet for a checkup they said she is fit and healthy! John Lewis has 3 plans on offer the cheapest plan is £6.20 a month which includes 20% off for the first year this gives for vet fee's £3000 of cover also £3000 dental treatment cover excess fee £80 is this enough cover? My circumstances are I am a pensioner on housing benefit which allows me to have reduced vet charges via the RSPCA please advise.

I found the same with Petplan and I've sent many claims in now. The only time that it took longer for me to get my £££ was when the vet took several weeks to send the claim form in, after Petplan received it I got the money within a week.

Gpt pets with both PetPlan and Argos Platinum - claimed on both, Argos pays within 10 days of receiving the claim (I normally email those to Argos), PetPlan around the same.

My vets accept direct claims for both PetPlan and Argos so no difference here.

Difference is massive though after few years if you made any claims - Argos will jump sky high while PetPlan increases by a little bit each year.

By then (after having claims) you will be stuck and unable to move the insurance so personally - I wuld now always go with PetPlan

As long as it's a 'for life' policy an not a '12 month' policy or similar that sounds pretty reasonable :)

Certainly, even with access to reduced vet treatment, I'd be wanting some cover in place (as they may refuse to prescribe certain drugs etc - or they may withdraw / change the T&Cs to quality)
