My fault I should have said =
In the DDS.txt window press ctrl and A (selects all)
ctrl and C (copies) then ctrl and V(pastes) in your reply:o Anyhow you managed to post most of the log.

Anyhow as GunJack said earlier there is a lot going on on your PC which is not strictly necessary - lots of HP bloat on there, plus Bing Bar and Amazon Music helper, also do you windows live mail for your email or do you just use Internet Explorer and log in to your mail using that?. It may be worth disabling some of those using CCleaner as GJ suggested.

Ok so I have also reset my browser settings (although I hadn't tweeked much but couldn't be sure) Not any noticeable change.

As a matter of course I clear history, temp files and cookies frequently during any time on the internet.

The log posted by request is all gobbledegook to me so if it could be explained in someway I'd be grateful.

I don't always understand techy mumbojumbo but I but am a willing pupil:)

The event log troubles me for some reason.

    Critical, last 7 days =1
    Error, last 24hrs=56 last 7 days=145
    Warning, last 24hrs=19 last 7 days=78
    Information, last hr=5 last 24hrs=1803 last 7 days=3811
Audit success, last hr=4 last 24hrs=4443 last 24hrs=7111

Is the above normal for an average of 10hrs a day on the lappy ? Or does it indicate problems that need sorting.

Are the error ones mainly with the same description? If so what is it

The Information and Audit ones are quite normal

Try downloading and running 'rkill' from the internet. This found and stopped a dodgy program that was hogging my processor a couple of days back. It will also give you a resulting log to view.

Something else I would do is check which programs you have on your system via the Control Panel and uninstall those that are superfluous. For instance some toolbar programs such as Bing can do dodgy things.
  • I also notice that you have edited the log , I seem to remember you had a strange NameServer entry on there, did you have a phone/tablet attached at the time ? the 192.168.x.x addresses cannot identify your home network if that was your reason for removing them, the 192.168 network does not get out to the internet it is a private address as are 10.x.x.x and 172.16.x.x-172.31..x.x

    HI,
Yes I had a late night wobble and removed it afraid it might identify me and leave me at risk. Probably daft, but have never done a log let alone posted so much info on a forum. Thanks for picking that up and reassuring me. And no nothing else was attached to the lappy.

I have had little time to do much, but have now removed Bing tool bar and the coupon printer thingy. I've checked the logs and in errors and have a lot of event id 100 and quite a few 7011's and 2's amongst others.

The brightness has stopped fluctuating, but I still keep getting lots of internet explorer is or has stopped responding which is so frustrating.

I have removed HP shopping, but am unsure which of the other hp stuff to remove. Although I understand the term bloatware I'm not sure what else to remove. I like photography so and watching videos and catch up tv so need some media programs, but don't know which to keep and which to remove.

Since doing the scans the other night I get a message now that I need to install flash player when on bbc iplayer or when trying to play samples on amazon before buying a cd. I can still view stuff on u toob though. I'm sure I had adobe flashplayer before and now it's disappeared.

Really appreciate all the replies and help from everyone as I have no one in RL to help iykwim. Until I got my own laptop 18mths back I was technophobic and now I'm far more willing to try and solve issues with a bit of help even if rather nervous.

    Flash Player here http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/

BUT Dont't let it give you Macafee Security scan plus - you don't more bloat

I can understand your nervousness , most people won't know about IP addresses anyhow. I am out at the moment, and don't have access to my Win8 mc. Will try and get back with some more suggestions later

So you haven't tried running 'rkill' ?
  • It may be worth running ADWcleaner from here https://toolslib.net/downloads/viewdownload/1-adwcleaner/
Just let it scan, then click on the report button and post the log - you know ctrl a, ctrl c, come here then ctrl v ;)
