Need help with laptop, slow, hangs and something just feels wrong

Hi,

Really hoping someone can help.

Internet pages are slow to load and seem to flash when doing so. I just feel like the laptop is not as fast or responsive as it was when I got it 18mths back. I use it for surfing and only shop online with a couple of places. I don't play games or download apps as such. I have only added Libre Office and have just removed VLC.

I try to be carefull but somehow my gmail account has been getting a lot of spam and although I select all and then delete I fear that I may have picked up a nasty from there. Unfortunately my gmail ac was used when I set up the laptop.

Now the brightness seems to be fluctuating as well.

So far I have run scans with the following,

Windows Defender

Spybot (Have since removed)

Malwarebytes (Downloaded and run scans)

Avast free 2015 (Downloaded and run scans)

Nothing found with any of the scans.

I have an Hp notebook with windows 8

I haven't backed up as have just got a portable hard drive to do so, but am cautious about connecting it and it needs to be reformatted. I'm worried in case my laptop is infected.

I'm not great with technology but I try my best and don't accept defeat easy.

What else can I do please

tia, M

  • [STRIKE]Did malwarebytes find anything ? (If so post the log)[/STRIKE] Just read fully no probs
Is it just sluggish on the internet ?(which browser do you use? and which ISP)
You said you downloaded avast , have you got any other antivirus on there?

  • I have only just downloaded and scanned with Avast in the last hour. I had been relying on windows defender, but now that has been disabled on adding avast.

last night I looked at the event log because I thought it was running slow. There are loads of event id codes and info that I just don't understand. This all has me rather worried and just a touch paranoid that things aren't right. I have my internet security and privacy settings on med/high. I have pop up blocker on and smart screen and do not track. I'm using internet explorer and google.
  • I am not any type of expert at analysing startup etc but perhaps DDS may help, post the DDS.txt log file on here it will hopefully help me but more likely others to decide if there is anything glaringly obvious. The link is here http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/dds/

The sub continent scammers ask you to check eventviewer and tell you your pc is infected etc , no need to worry about that too much unless there are many consecutive Errors/Warnings in a short period ... we may need to go back to that though;)

  • Thank you for responding. Am on bleeping computer now. Back shortly.
  • I may need to zzzz soon, but will check back later today to see how it looks , if you need instructions to post the log it is simple the DDS.txt log will open in notepad (as will the attach.txt which is not needed for now) click in the DDS.txt log window and press the ctrl key and C together and then start your reply on here and press ctrl key and V together.

Do this and restart your computer.

Press start and r key st the same time.

In the run window type "msconfig"

    Now in System configuration Utility

    Under General

    Click on Diagnostic Startup

Click ok and restart your computer.

I'm a little out of practice with DDS, however nothing looks particularly dodgy, but it does suggest too much happening on startup and probably too many things trying to auto-update which won't help.

Get CCleaner from either piriform or filehippo. Right-Click on the shortcut and Run As Admin. Run the Cleaner and Registry cleaner parts (delete all they find), then on the Tools > Startup, disable everything except avast, and reboot the machine. Take it from there...
    ......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......

I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple :D

Ok so I have also reset my browser settings (although I hadn't tweeked much but couldn't be sure) Not any noticeable change.

As a matter of course I clear history, temp files and cookies frequently during any time on the internet.

The log posted by request is all gobbledegook to me so if it could be explained in someway I'd be grateful.

I don't always understand techy mumbojumbo but I but am a willing pupil:)

The event log troubles me for some reason.

    Critical, last 7 days =1
    Error, last 24hrs=56 last 7 days=145
    Warning, last 24hrs=19 last 7 days=78
    Information, last hr=5 last 24hrs=1803 last 7 days=3811
Audit success, last hr=4 last 24hrs=4443 last 24hrs=7111

Is the above normal for an average of 10hrs a day on the lappy ? Or does it indicate problems that need sorting.
