This comes up every year and we get more and more extreme posts about the room temperature they tolerate before heating is switched on. iirc 8c was the lowest.

I post this article each year:

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/5372296.stm

    Quote:
24C - top range of comfort
21C - recommended living room temperature
Less than 20C - death risk begins
    18C - recommended bedroom temperature
16C - resistance to respiratory diseases weakened
12C - more than two hours at this temperature raises blood pressure and increases heart attack and stroke risk
5C - Significant risk of hypothermia

Personally I like the temperature to be at least 21C when sitting down watching TV etc.

The governement changed it's recommendations this year.

It now says (for healthy 1-64 year olds) that 18 C / 65F is suitable for daytime living. If they are wearing appropriate clothing and are active, they may wish to heat their homes to slightly less.

And overnight, the 18°C (65F) threshold may be less important for healthy people (1 – 64) if they have sufficient bedding, clothing and use thermal blankets or heating aids as appropriate

    https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/365755/Min_temp_threshold_for_homes_in_winter.pdf

And since I understand a 1C reduction in set temperature of a home can give 10% energy savings, abiding by the latest governement stategy will not only keep the Green Party happy, not only help keep the lights on this year, but also save you a bob or two

I often think when i see on the news pictures of some of these homeless people sleeping with only a cardboard box and binbag for cover, how i'd manage if i found myself in that position.

It dropped to about 66f during the day yesterday (heating off) and that feels cold.

66F is 19C. That apparently is far too warm for some people!

I wonder how many people 'measure' the temperature by looking at the setting of a wall thermostat in a cold hall - which can bear no comparison with the temperature in the living room.

I too have lived under conditions of extreme cold(and heat); however I still would not be comfortable sitting watching TV with the temperature at 19C.

I have no heating on when in bed but my house is seldom above 13-15 degrees anyway. This time of the year I have three duvets and the window open and I'm pretty warm.

    My house was 7 C when I got up at 11am.... ;0)

I start to get uncomfortable at about 19c, but that is due to nagging not the cold. :D

It's the heat that makes me uncomfortable.

I will bet my mortgage that Cameron & his Westminster bum chums does not keep Number 10, the Houses of Parliament and their many many houses at 18C.

They can recommend what they like, but while I still have control of my thermostat, not them, they can stick it where I wouldn't go for any amount of money.

In the winter my heating can be as low as 5 degrees during the night. As I am tucked up under a duvet no heating is required. My heating has a frost setting and will switch on if it goes below 5 degrees. Most nights it probably sits between 8 and 10 degrees in the middle of the night.

I never have heating on overnight, but I have a thick winter duvet which makes a huge difference.

I have a digital thermometer in the room which shows the lowest its reached since it was reset about a week ago has been 12.2C.

My heating didn't come on tonight as planned as battery in controller died - it registered at 16 degrees and I was on the verge of tears!!
