A new black Avensis pulled out of a junction ahead of me - nice bright LEDs at the front, NOTHING at the back, and he caused other people to slow down.
It's dangerous for numpties driving round with no lights when they should be on, and it's just as dangerous for them to think they can be seen, when in fact they can only be seen from the front.

They probably didn't realise their lights weren't on, because on a lot of modern cars the dashboard illuminates when the ignition is turned on.

On older cars you quickly realised your lights weren't on when you seen the unlit dash

That's why there is usually a picture of a dipped headlight that illuminates when you turn the lights on.

You're not suggesting that drivers should actually look at the controls and be aware of what they are/aren't telling them, are you? That's fighting talk!

Always regarded DRL's as being introduced for the less competent driver who don't know when and how to use their lights. It now seems that even with DRL's the less competent drivers still have difficulties in this area as they use just their DRLs at night or in poor visibility which of course means no tail lights! Just this morning I must of passed a dozen in a 4 mile journey with either just DRLs on or no lights at all in heavy/persistent rain.

My car has an auto setting which turns the lights on when it gets dark enough but obviously in daytime fog/rain, the level of the driver's competence is required to switch the required lights depending on the conditions.

My personal opinion is that if you aren't competent enough to judge when to use your lights and perform a simple task to switch them on, then perhaps you should think about sticking to public transport.

In answer to the OP's question; I have no experience in this car apart from one I hired about 5 years ago. But I believe the Fiat 500 has an option of turning the DRLs off so I would of thought it may be possible on other cars.

Not as obviously as an unlit dashboard though is it?
I don't think it's acceptable that they do it, but i don't think car manufacturers help things by having dashboards that are lit even when the lights are off.

I can't see the logic behind this. You don't need the dash lights in daytime, and as you say they are a useful indicator - if you can't see the speedo, it's time to switch the lights on :)

My wife's C-Max is even more puzzling: if you use the remote button to unlock the car, the side and tail lights illuminate. I think they stay lit until you start the engine. I mean, why? The Mondeo lights the interior lights when you unlock, and I see can the convenience of this, but why the sidelights?

Perhaps not but in my experience, there are indicator lights in the dash (usually green) to tell you whether you have and what lights are on.

That's the point i was replying to.

It's easier to see when the whole dashboard is unlit compared to when one small light being off in an array of lights.

A lurking issue is LED daytime running lights... when just one LED stops working, it's liable to fail an MOT and so the whole unit needs replacing.

It's even more ridiculous where the LEDs are integrated into a headlamp unit... as Audi owners are beginning to find out as their cars come out of warranty.

I'm not sure on the stance where the DRL's also are the sidelights and one led goes out in a cluster, but DRL's them self are not part of the MOT (yet!)
