I like the countdown to speed limits that you see sometimes. They give you a 3,2,1, before the actual limit sign. Useful on unfamiliar roads/blind bends. I also like when they take you from 60 to 50 or 40 before a 30, instead of straight from 60 to 30.

If it's a blind bend, why would you need a speed limit reminder?

Because many drive to speed limits instead of to the road and conditions sadly - which I know you are getting at :)

Hi everyone, new to the forum but i feel this is the best place for me to come to. Hopefully I get mature answers, but basically i got caught speeding :( twice! in the same spot :( I'm 18 years old and have a black box. i was going 36 whilst braking from a 60mph zone and going 38mph going accelerating a little too fast before the 60mph zone. So what are my chances of getting a speed awareness course for one of the offences? I cant loose my licence other wise I loose my job and would be horrible.
    Many thanks

forget your blackbox "evidence", they take speed averages from a longer time interval than a speed camera.

A black box communicates with GPS satellite and works out speed based on distance travelled, that speed reading could be over a 15 second period.

A speed camera records over the tiny distance, ususally no more than 2 seconds and would be a much better gauge of speed for that specific time.

I doubt a speed camera would misread over 20mph than your actual speed. Bearing in mind there is a tolerance of 3mph + 10% of your speed so you can do 78mph on the motorway and speed cameras will not respond.

Seriously, nobody should complain about speed cameras, there are so many warnings, never mind the roads are marked AND there is a giant yellow box the size of a small hatchback to warn you WE ARE MONITORING YOUR ROAD SPEEDS. The authorities give so many chances but idiots still fall for it. Imagine if there were no road markings and all speed cameras were discreet.

Are you willing to put that to the test for us?

You put your sat nav on and drive with that on for a couple of months. Make sure you exceed all speed limits by 10% plus 3 not slowing down for cameras.

We look forward to your results.

    The "tolerance" is/was actually 10% plus 1.

10% plus 2 is the starting point for enforcement.

Got a update for you all. The gods must of been looking over me, I've been given a Speed Awareness Course and because the other offence was in close proximity of time, no further action has been taken. So basically I do the sac and have no points at all or I pay the fine and get 3points!

Thanks for the update, and let that be a lesson for you young fellow-m'lad*

edit: note that the correct lesson is not "I can get away with it", it's "Blimey, that was a close call, guv'nor. Was a fair cop and won't do it again, and no mistake!"
