When I visited my friend on Friday we had a conversation about scooters and she evidently leased (rented) one for her Father. I had no idea you could do this. I understand they also occasionally pop up on FB marketplace. I think I will suggest one for my lovely Mum who is now happily using a stick after a couple of years of protesting ("I am only using it because DG-S2 bought it for me") - she has begun to say she can't walk that far and she gets tired. It would be a little aid for when she does not fancy the hill.

Thanks😊
I am hoping to buy one fairly soon.
Originally I wanted one to go in the car but that is not currently feasible.
I have ruled out a light weight one as I have been advised that they are prone to tipping & I was unable to lift one into the boot.
So I am currently looking into a heavier weight one.
It all gives me a sore head & of course the bigger ones are way more expensive.
I can’t decide if I have ruled out second hand ones or not.
They don’t seem much cheaper than new ones & of course no guarantees. Statements like only used once or twice but with a full service history leave me bemused to be honest.I am a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on Mortgage Free Wannabe & Local Money Saving Scotland & Disability Money Matters. The humour in the conversation with my friend lay in her Father's determination to renew the rental of his scooter, despite having used it just twice in the year he had had it. My DM-I-L had one but had never ridden a bike (and could not get the idea of steering, the accelerator or the brakes to stop). My D-SIL recounted her using hers in the Hospital corridor and running over the feet of everyone waiting to be called in the corridor and getting faster and faster. I am very taken with the idea of a rental one to see how you get on - you could validate the model that works for you and whether you will use it.

To be honest a second hand one (not from a dealer as they're pricier) would be fine. E's had his big one for 9 years now and it's used 4/5 times a week, on sand, road, across fields, you name it, we've had one new set of batteries and it was serviced for the first 3 years. The replacement motors and batteries are not to bad price wise and most shops that sell new scooters/mobility aids will offer a repair service (even if you didn't buy from them). So if ones been sitting barely used then it may just need new batteries which DS should be able to fit easily for you.
We brought a 2nd hand smaller car one very cheap locally, that needed new batteries and then the electrics failed. The replacement bits and fitting was around £100 so in the grand scheme of things, not to bad. And an awful lot cheaper than a 2nd hand one from a dealer. (I think we paid £200 and the same model from the dealer was £800). That's now 3 years old and still going strong too."Start every day off with a smile and get it over with" - W. C. Field.0 -
Lots of good scooter advice there Beanie. Renting is pricey, as you know Mr SA rents his via Motability - I just wanted everything covered and the way he slams it about means its often in for repair.I get knocked down but I get up again (Chumbawamba, Tubthumping)0

Sounds like you’ve had a productive weekend Beanie. Good that you’ve given thought to a scooter again. Just a thought - do you have any National Trust places nearby (or Scottish equivalent) I know hey hire scooters to get around the grounds...you could try it for a while.January spends - £587.580
