you WILL pay a premium for staying within the city centre, as you would with any city. Depending on what you want from from your accommodation, there are lots of other options available.

Penarth, Barry and Newport are all close by, and will have cheaper options (e.g. Barry Premier Inn, 20 minutes by train, is about £90 on that night). BUT last trains from Cardiff run before midnight, and as notanewuser correctly states, these trains will be extremely busy. You will need to queue in advance due to the volume of human traffic trying to get through. Were you to stay later, a taxi from Cardiff to one of those areas could comfortably cost £30+.
