Why are some call centre staff so blooming rude?

Someone phoned up around 12 / 1pm today and I eventually answered the phone. He thought I was my mum and I informed him I wasn't and she's not here atm.

He then asked me again if I was mum and I yet again, told him no. He then called me a liar.

My dad heard the conversation and I then handed the phone to him. The man then put the phone down.

The same man phoned up again 4 hours later. I told him again that mum wasn't here and could I please ask who's calling. He then put the phone down on me.

My dad did say that if he does call again, he will have a word with him. There is no need to be so rude. With most people, (usually relatives) I inform them that I'm not mum and I am infact her daughter. They then apologise and that's it.

We have caller display and the number was displayed as "out of order"; so we couldn't get the number. Dad did do 1471 and I believe he got no answer.

Really can't understand why the man thought I was lying.

Do you mean "out of area"?

Either way the caller was out of order as so many of them are.

No. Sure it said "out of order".

Likely to be cold calling scum. People often try to fob them off by pretending not to be the person they ask for.

I'm sure there's the odd rude call centre worker out there, but they're outnumbered about a thousand to one by the unimaginably rude customers they often have to talk to.

Which doesn't give him the excuse to be rude and accuse me of lying...

Next time, tell him she's just [insert suitable excuse*] & you'll go and get her, then leave him hanging on for a-g-e-s. It'll waste his time because he can't move on to the next victim as soon as if you hang up straight away & it'll take him a little while to realise.

I feel sorry for the people doing these cold calls they must bet a lot of abuse 'cos nobody wants them, but that's no reason to be rude, As soon as they come across with that atitude there's no chance of them getting a sale.

I worked for a year between jobs as a Team Leader for Sky.
I was to reprimand emloyees who had not met targets.
I lost count of the people in tears I had to console due to bullying Managers or abusive Customers.
After a year I worked one weeks notice.
My Manager thanked me and said that people usually walked out.
Must be one of the worst jobs of all time.
