Hiya i hope this is in the right forum.

My friend came into £20,000 as a back payment for something, her boyfriend pushed for this money to go into his account, and she did put the money into his account, since then they have split and is refusing to give the money back. can she do anything to get the money back?

She gave him the whole lot? Did they go to the bank together? Do they have anything in writing?

Read the title - thought £50 may have gone astray...

20k! That's a life changing amount of money!
  • thanks for all the replys, after they split it came out she was in a abusively relationship, hes bullied her and actually hit her on a few occasions.
There is no proof about this though.
She has told me he has bullied her into giving the money to him for safe keeping.

    Agree

She needs to go see the DV officer at the local police station and to report the situation regarding him taking her money. Whether the financial abuse counts as theft or fraud I would not want to say but think she has to start there.

If she can get a crime number, she might also have a cat in hell's chance with the bank.

Surely there must be proof of this money somewhere along the line as I cant imagine she would have had 20k in notes! so it must have been paid to her either by cheque or bacs into her account and then transferred from her to him??

Was the money paid direct to him from the 3rd party or did it go via her first?

How is the "safekeeping" reason even in any way reasonable?? How is his bank account any safer than hers? Unless she was previously keeping the cash under her mattress!

She needs to go to the police if she was coerced into giving him the money.
