What you are missing is the the stone and ring are actually worth a fraction of the new purchase price. The jewellers mark up is absolutely huge. Forget insurance valuations, they are for replacement purposes only.
Good news if you are happy to buy secondhand though.
A car is worth naff all when it's driven home. They cost a damn site more than 2.5 k for anything decent.0 -
Well I guess it doesn't really matter who thinks the OP's budget is too high, too low or if engagement rings are a total waste of money.
His money, his choice.
I hope he buys wisely and his fiance is thrilled with his choice.0 -

No they don't. I pity your future fianc! if that's your way of thinking. What if the poor bloke could only afford say half of that?
It's totally up to the individual couple what they deem to be a suitable figure to spend. I guess problems arise when one of the couple has ideas above their station.0 -

You've misread or misunderstood.0 -

Upon re-reading it, it appears I seem to have yes.
You were talking about getting a decent car under £2500? Again, I'd have to disagree on that....but that's a whole different topic!
I thought it unusual (if it was the ring you were talking about) for you to come across so shallow.

I was. I meant a new one (as assuming OP is getting a new ring!).
I think OPs budget is really good but I don't think it's fair for him to be told it's too much as that's his decision. I'd be thrilled whatever my OH spent but I do think if it's something the lady will be wearing every day for many years then something hard wearing (usually more exp!) would be preferable if affordable. Sorry for misunderstanding, I'm not very good with my words sometimes

I'm not sure that I see the connection. However, as you mentioned it, one of my cars has negative depreciation. You just need to buy wisely... just like with engagement rings.

No problem....maybe I should read better! But like Gloomendoom, I still don't really see the connection?0 -

Connection that people are often happy to spend much more on other items, say a car, which will quickly deprecate in value. Often people sell on second hard cars or part exchange them, thus losing a lot of money - they could have just bought a really cheap one. Same scenario as Gloomendoom said about the ring, however hopefully the recipient won't want to sell on so point is the ring is an investment as opposed to something serving a purpose.
But like you say, as long as both are happy with the price/product be it high or low then there shouldn't be a problem.0 -
