Halifax paying cash in

It might do but which bank do you work for? This thread was originally about Halifax but more recently seems to have been more about Santander, so at best your info may relate to one of these....Hi,
I have worked in a bank for eight years and wish to clarify some points on this thread.
The immediate Deposit Machine (IDM) can be used by anyone who is in possession of a bank account card, (not business banking or credit card) without the need to enter a pin. These machine accept notes and cheques.
If you are using the counter service you may get asked to enter the card into the chip and pin device although no pin number will be asked for as its a deposit and PIN numbers are used when withdrawing funds or a balance enquiry is made.
If you are asked for a pin then the cashier has made a mistake on their systems and are processing a withdrawal and not a deposit.
Hope this helps.0 -
Hi
I work for halifax but I do find it strange that you encounter problems when crediting over the counter with other banks, what would have happened to the poster who paid in cash in Santander if it wasn't your account...
I can only assume there is a overide button on the cashier side which would allow you to pay into an account without PIN number.
The introduction of chip and pin devices have reduced the error on the cashier part when entering account numbers namely credit card account numbers as this can cause all kinds of problems.
The chip and pin device reads the numbers from the chip so less errors then when cashiers were manually entering them.
I do find it strange that you have to enter your pin when crediting into a account as anyone can credit a account maybe the practice is to use manual entry in this assitance and not use the card in other banks.
As the OP was related to halifax procedures I would say it's not procedure to use the machine but its used to encourage customers an alternative way to credit accounts (their own or anyone with an halifax bank account) and to save queuing when it's busy if it's just to credit and no other enquiries are needed.
If machines are not for you then there is the envelope system still available but this service of crediting is only applied at the end of each day, whereas the IDM machine credits the account real time and you can be assured its been credited at the time of deposit like you get when you use the counter system.

Thanks for the reply.
So I encountered a battle axe. As I thought.
Just 2 weeks prior another clerk took cash over the counter at the same branch with me giving them the card.0
