Vinegar keps indefinitely as it is a preservative, so you can use it without worrying about poisoning anyone!

This is what I thought, it beinng acidic and all. But a long time ago my OH had some balsamic vinegar with mould in it - not nice.

    Hi,
I am now the proud owner of a 5kg net of red onions (was £1) in asda lastnight, but now Im not sure what to do with them all. I can use a few in salads and have in the past thrown the odd red onion in with white onions in cooked dishes but what can I do with the rest. Would they work in french onion soup (have googled it and seems ok,,has anyone tried this?) does anyone have any suggestions as would hate to waste them
    thanks

Lol - I had this problem last year except I also had about 8kg potatoes, 6kg carrots, 7kg strawbs!!

I made onion soup. Mine wasn't that nice so I just used it as a base for other things.

I also made carmelised onion chutney which is really nice with cheese. I gave some away as presents.

I also chopped up loads and froze them which has proved to be extremely handy.

Perhaps travel cannot prevent bigotry. But by demonstrating that all people cry, laugh, eat, worry and die, it introduces the idea that if we try to understand each other, we may even become friends.

Lots of ideas here. I like to make sweet onion relish (chop 2 red onions, in pan with a little olive oil, when softened add 6 tsp of sugar, cook for a couple of mins more) - is good with everything especially fish.

  • How about chopping some and saute in oil/butter then freezing in meal sized amounts?

    Make a tart?

Cut in half and bake with a little butter with thyme and serve as a veg?
    Put the kettle on. ;)
  • Im with Lynz, red onion marmalade - its yum and deffo lasts for ages!
Roast a few off with other veg (peppers or whatever) in some olive oil and a bit of honey for a med veg pasta thing - if you make too much, freeze the veg in portions to defrost with a bit of pasta later :)

I chop and freeze to use in all sorts, handy to take a little packet out already chopped and just throw them in the pot :D
  • Onions store well as long as they're kept cool. Use exactly as you would white onions.
