Hey smokey dave. I absolutely wanted a black cat - I adore them! We were planning to get a black cat from a rescue but Pops could no longer stay at his last home so we took him, rather than him going back to the shelter he'd come from. :)

He is indeed chipped. :) The rescue he came from actually keep it registered to them (they don't let you change it to your details), so abandoned pets end up back there. They've got our details now, so if they're contacted through his chip they'll ring us.

Fantastic report, glad he's settling in well. Good idea for his previous slave to come with him so hopefully it was a good handover.

Was he rescued from the RSPCA by any chance? I enquired about the microchip details (seeing she had been rehomed once and returned to them) and they said they would update them with our details, which confused me a bit as Cat's Protection leave you to sort it yourself and the cat was registered to us.

He didn't come from the RSPCA - he's from a local independent charity. But they have very similar procedures to the RSPCA and the same list of 'banned roads' that they won't rehome to as the local RSPCA branch.

Though from the sounds of it, even the RSPCA let you put your details on the chip (though they do it for you)? With Pops, the contact details on the chip actually have to stay as the rescue place. They then have their own list of cats/chips and the owners, so if a vet phones and has the cat, they then contact us.

I'd rather the chip could be re-registered to us, because I worry about a delay in us finding out anything, but that's just my control freakery. I can understand their point about abandoned kitties finding their way back to them.

Feeling just a tiny bit upset at how nervous he was this morning (only because it seemed like a step backwards from yesterday evening) but at least he's eating and drinking. :)

That's what I was thinking also, our previous cat was knocked down by a car and taken into a local vet who contacted us via the details on his chip. Sadly it was already too late, but I would be concerned about somebody having to go all around the houses to contact us.

I'm sure Pops will be fine in a few days. At least he's come from one loving home to another, it's just a bit strange for him at the moment.

Not sure how Pixie will be, she was a stray but obviously had a home as she was wearing a collar, been to a foster home whilst her collar injury healed, then to the rehoming place, then to a new home with a cat she didn't like, then back to the RSPCA again, then us on Saturday, all in the space of 4 months. Can't see this being as straightforward for her as for our previous cat who walked in and took over!

Aww he's lovely. Don't worry about him hiding away, he will come out :)
If he's eating and drinking then that's the main thing. Good on you for taking him on.

Hubby popped home for lunch and Pops is still hiding away, though ventured out to be petted before getting back in his box.

I'd mind less if he'd been doing it since he arrived - it's only that he seemed relatively OK yesterday evening and has freaked out today. :(

    Still no wee or poop...

Our latest rescue cat spent the first three weeks behind a bookcase.
She is a beautiful friendly little black and white beauty. She had been nailed into a box when she was about to have kittens and dumped by a busy road. After a year, she still does not like going into a travel box, but does play inside a cardboard box. Her microchip is also registered to the cat charity. We have had her a year and she does not want to go out. Many years ago we had a cat who hid behind the curtains for weeks and he became the most wonderful pet, living to almost twenty.

Thanks, lora. :) It's heartbreaking knowing how stressed they must feel at first and not being able to explain to it to them!

Going back to the chip thing, I wonder if it would be possible to persuade your vet to give her a second microchip which you could have your details registered on. Might be worth asking the question?
