if it was used several years ago could it be an old account he has fogotten about?
That would be too easy! B-in-L does not recognise the account and he has never lived where the sort code is located.

Sort code has very little, if any, relevance to where one lives

Could you answer my question posed yesterday:

Has your brother in law changed his bank or bank account by any chance?

That might explain why the details don't now match. Did you check his details with him, before making the payment?

B-in-L has never used that account number. RBS say it is not a dormant account. I did not check with B-in-L before making the transfer; I assumed that the stored account details were for the payee shown in the list; obviously that was incorrect. Perhaps we shouldn't trust our stored list of payees!
  • You haven't mentioned whether your brother in law banks with RBS or not. If he does back with them, he might have more luck trying to resolve it with them. Just because he doesn't recognise the account details, doesn't mean it isn't his.

I'd ask Santander whether those details on your payee list have ever been amended. If so when and how. They should be able to tell.

No, B-in-L has never banked at RBS.

    Update:
After submitting a Complaint I've been able to get Santander to take this problem on-board. Their backroom people will contact RBS. They quote a 21 day timescale.
I don't understand why the normal customer service staff were not able to escalate this matter for me; it cannot be that rare a problem.
I'll let you know how I get on later.
