Lost money transfer?

Well this is what to expect when one banks with a cowboy bank like Santander...........
Only interested in luring you in, couldn't give a stuff about you when things go wrong.
Complain to Santander, it is their problem not RBS.
Actually it's not a problem for either bank, the responsibility rests entirely with the OP for getting the details wrong on the transfer. If he wants help getting his money back then it is indeed Santander that he will need to ask, but going in all guns blazing (to continue the cowboy metaphor) may result in them declining to offer any assistance at all.0 -
The only solution is for Santander to contact the receiving bank and ask them to contact their customer to advise of the error and seek repayment. It is not a bank error, there is no obligation on anyone to do anything - the recipient may have a moral duty to return it, but if they choose not to do so - that is the end of the matter.
The new scheme being touted changed nothing of import - the new terms and conditions will allow the recipient bank (only) to repatriate the funds after giving notice. If your bank isn't the recipient bank, your stuffed.0 -

Not really so. If someone has your money and you ask for it back and they refuse to return it, then actually it constitutes a criminal act, ie theft. The Theft Act 1968 is the reference point for this.0 -
Many thanks to everyone who has addressed my post. I've written a polite note to Santander asking them (again) to help me to try and get my money back. I'll update this thread when I get a response.
The strange thing is that when I made this payment I selected the correct name from my list of existing payees but I subsequently discovered that the account details associated with that name were unknown to me. How has that happened? Could it be some kind of hack?
So, do not trust your list of previous payees; it may not be correct.

So I guess the next question to you is have you made a payment to that particular payee before, and if so, did that payment reach the correct payee? If it did then it would mean that the payee detail has been altered. Many thanks to everyone who has addressed my post. I guess I must have made a successful payment to that person before or their name wouldn't be on my list. It must have been some years ago though.

Has your brother in law changed his bank or bank account by any chance?
That might explain why the details don't now match. Did you check his details with him, before making the payment?
If he had switched recently (under the 7 day switching guarantee) the payment from you would have been redirected.0 -
Well no, not necessarily. You may have set up the payee, and then cancelled the payment. But the payee detail would remain there on your account.I guess I must have made a successful payment to that person before or their name wouldn't be on my list. It must have been some years ago though.

As badger09 is suggesting, it could be that the payee has shifted accounts. However, I'm kinda assuming by what you are saying here is that the payee details on your list of payees is showing the correct name, but an incorrect sort code and account number for your brother in law? So, has your brother in law received the funds that you sent to him, or have you not enquired?0 -
My brother in law did not receive the funds and does not recognise the account details0

if it was used several years ago could it be an old account he has fogotten about?0
