My friend's Mum wanted to go left at a roundabout (first exit)

The roundabout had a queue for the left lane so she did a lap of the roundabout and then exited. The Police pulled her over for doing this and gave her a verbal warning

I had no idea that it was an offence myself and I've been driving since 1997. Was anybody aware that you could be pulled over for this?

I've done this plenty, if more did it would shorten the queue and get traffic flowing.
What offence is supposed to have been committed?

If it's just a verbal warning then it might be that the occifer was warning her that it might be construed as driving without due care (i.e. deliberately picking the wrong lane to get ahead of traffic.
Also, incidents like this MAY (I'm not saying will) lead to 'road rage' by other drivers who don't like people getting in front of them (however daft that is).
Also may depend how she did it, was she waiting in the queue and suddenly pull out? did she cause anyone to slow/alter their course etc

Well as i understand she did not get ahead of traffic. she stayed in her lane all the time and at the round about went right and completed full cirle and exited what was exit 1.

Unless it was mini round about(which i m sure wont have 2 lanes) than it's perfectly legal. Even my instructor told me when i was learning if you dont manage to get in correct lane and you are in right lane and you can go round on the round about.

Yep, if you're not sure use the right hand lane as you can work your way out.

    Debt-free and Proud!
Done this hundreds of times, often to the annoyance of other drivers. Not my fault they aren't bright enough to think of it first and would rather waste their life queuing. Same as at roadworks rather than queue for a mile or two i'll stay in outside lane and then get in when i have to, usually infront of some bloke half asleep in a Mondeo. I do it rather more successfully than that video of a focus the other day.

Exatly. sometimes they just dont like smart a$$. they pulled me over once becuase according to them i was speeding when i pointed at my dashcam with biult in gps speed thing, they said i just floored it after the traffic lights, and than slowed down once i reached 30.
There was no wheel spin(screeching) than how can i have commited any offence in 1.6 hatchback. they dont go 0-30 in 2 seconds.

They than just left after politly telling me i should be saving petrol blah blah.
And idiots drove at 25mph on straight clear road after they overtook me.

Bytheway i know 30 is maximum not minimum and you should be driving according to road condtions etc
  • Crikey. Not ever done this deliberately, but when lost on which way to go on roundabout, done it loads of time. Sometimes the signs off the roundabout are better than the ones coming up to it.
    Didn't know it was wrong.
