Vauxhalls are okay. Unremarkable. As far as I'm concerned, they are very much in the "white goods" category that many put the Koreans into -- only more so.
I'd buy one if it was cheap enough. I've never had the slightest inclination to buy one because I wanted one, though.
There's a reason Opels just don't sell in significant numbers across Europe. It's only the UK, where buyers consider them 'British', that they have a dominant market share.
Hyundai or GM as a white-goods car? Well, only one of them looks likely to still be around in ten years' time without government bailouts.0 -
90%? Can you post a link to the statistics you quote?
I'm looking out of the window and there are eight BMWs in the car park. Not one of them is a 318 or a 320d, but by your statistics there should only be 0.8 535ds, 650is, 640ds, and 540is whereas I count 1 of each plus others.
Unless of course you just want a car to get you from A to B, and you don't give a crap whether it's good on a twisty road, powered by six cylinders or three, German or Japanese, and you don't want to look like a moderately successful middle-manager or sales rep.0 -
My criteria for cars, generally:
1) Is it as reliable as possible?
2) Does it have a decent safety rating?
3) Can I fit 2-3 cheerleaders or a botload of LARP kit in it?
Annnnnd....we're done.

Did you forget
4) Something that can give that thrill of revving to 8000 rpm, bullying my way past cars. Something to make me feel like a god, that gives me a huge thrill, roaring past cars, overtaking them, taking sharp turns fast and letting that V8 scream.

BMW are extremely well engineered cars, and geared towards driving pleasure. Take a high revving inline 6 on a twisty road and you'll see what I mean

I think in the 'real world' a modern 320d would stack up well against a lot of cars to be honest.

Just driven from Birmingham to Manchester and only saw two breakdowns a BMW and an Audi. So much for you german reliability, both seemed to be loving the driving experience.0

I mean the 3 series, the top end 3 series are 6 cylinders. The M is a completely different kettle of fish0 -

I never did say BMW were reliable. They have average reliability ratings. I will agree with you here though, a lot of the times when I see a broken down car on the motorway it is a BMW. That said if a BMW is properly maintained it, especially the older E46/E39, they can go on forever. The engines in that generation were bullet proof.
If a car is well 'engineered' it doesn't necessarily equate to reliable. As for German cars, I think the right word is 'durable.' Their interiors will last longer than Japs/Fords/Vauxhalls and they won't rattle/squeak as much past 100k miles.
The TDI VAG cars have a reputation for being reliable and can reach 200k fairly easily.0
