Dont agree with that statement at all
My Hubby IS 100% genuine if he is asked straight questions about how his disability affects him he would still struggle to give a straight answer but its more likely to be what is actually going on with him than if its a friendly chat, he can appear normal to anyone that doesn't know him,and talk for England which may appear to others as being normal when infact everything he is talking about is what he thinks he should do or be capable of doing where as in reality he is not the person he thinks he is!
for example, In conversation I know he would say he goes shopping in reality if there is no disabled parking space he wouldn't be able to go at all if he is lucky enough to get a space he clings onto the trolley all the way round the shop and often the racking as well to stop himself from falling, it takes him over a hour to go round a small aldi and get a bottle of milk and if I dare to ask him for more than one thing then i get numerous calls from the shop as he has forgotten what to get! And on top of that he sometimes has to sit on the floor if his legs give way waiting for the feeling to come back in them, there is a HUGE difference between what is said on a friendly chat and what a medical f2f is
He has also took part in market research on phone calls and has had no idea he has even took part in them its just been some one that phones here for one of those friendly chats!
His f2f is tomorrow ( 49 weeks after application ) hope he gets a medical approach rather than a friendly chat!
My youngest son is the same, in his head, he can do all sorts of things, in reality however, he can do none of them.
He will quite happily say he can easily walk on his own for miles whereas the reality is that when it comes down to it, he completely freaks out and cowers behind walls etc as he is too scared to do anything else...or he just doesn't leave the house at all.
Or that he can talk to anyone about anything...the reality is that he doesn't like people and will rarely talk to them unless they are really really trusted and even then, if he has a problem, he still won't stay anything, even to me!
He is not hiding his disability, he just has a different awareness of it, instead of delusions of grandeur (which he also has), it's delusions of ability!
We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.0 -
