If they switched them off we know that how?

We don't know that, and in fairness and what I have observed, no one is prepared to find out.

Too late now anyway, one U turn later and they're back on. Too much lost revenue I guess.

Most (all?) police cars are fitted with ANPR and cameras which calculate the speed of other cars. No reason they can't pull someone for speeding (and they often do on motorways etc).

Very few police cars are fitted with any sort of cameras at all and those that are are generally one of the shrinking number of dedicated traffic vehicles. Police can still stop a vehicle for speeding even if they don't have cameras or calibrated speedos, however two PCs have to be present to verify the speed.

My force publishes the location of mobile speed cameras on its website and in local newspapers. At the same time about 50% of its fixed cameras are working at any given time.

But it was in relation to the West Midlands.

But the West Midlands turned the cameras off.
Not just west midlands, the government cut funding and thus most area's the camera's have been turned off to save money in their upkeep it depends on where the cuts are made per council area, so one county may have all cams operating in another council area there maybe none working.

West Midlands were the only midlands force (if not national) to do it, hence it being news.

Disrupt or a simply correction of your error?

You were taking this thread somewhere else, with your suggestions of freedom of information requests for information they cannot possibly hold.

As for the other two posters, other than seeing a post from one last night, I know nothing about them.

I think Wiltshire and Oxfordshire had done so a while before.

Fair point, I can't comment nationally. I'd did say they were the only midlands one. I do still stand by my original point though, if the have switched them off there is no evidence people are slowing down at the sites and secondly a freedom of information request would therefore be useless.

I , and others certainly do, to risky for the few seconds to know if they are off or on. On the A34 at the exit of M6 J7 southbound before scott arms, people slow for that, A34 High St newtown and birchfield road, people slow for that, the one on the northbound they slow for that too, and the northbound one has benn replaced with a different looking gatso.

And so you should. They've switched them back on.

So perhaps that they switched them off on April 1st, could have been just an April fools prank.
