I pre-ordered this for my son on the xbox 360 at the game store. I have in store credit with them from previous trade ins.

I was shocked that they charged me £49.99 for this. Its £10 cheaper in most other places (Tesco, Amazon etc)

yes its expensive in game. it was £45 in grainger games today for ps3/360. i paid £40 in asda, next gen was £44.

Dunno, but I paid £45 for mine all in out of Game on 360 - Asda weren't open & honestly can't say I'm all that bothered about an extra fiver. Helps that I traded in a couple of old games but ultimately I go to Game because I know they know their stuff - something that my local supermarkets can't say. When I add it up over the course of the year I spend more in Game, but get much better value for my money.

Games in supermarkets are usually loss leaders, most people go on to buy other things in the store to make up for it.

I played it for about 5 hours yesterday and actually like it. MP feels like Black Ops 2 did, but easier. Not played SP yet.

I know they're loss leaders, that's one of the major reasons why it annoys me greatly as in the end auld Agness who thinks x-box is what that fella Muhammed Ali is pays more for games than the gamers. Then again it's another example of where supermarkets are destroying the marketplace from the inside out.

it was on the asda website which stores were open at midnight. some people need to look for the cheapest option. my local game were charging £50 for the 360 version. game staff may know their stuff(some would debate this) but do you need that to buy a call of duty game?

I'd rather buy it from a retailer who's not bumping old Agnes for the game when people are too damn cheap to pay for it - I prefer ethics when they're affordable.

Not necessarily. Buying in decent bulk numbers, the likes of Tesco are probably paying just over 30 quid for a console version of a new release title.

The real margin is in digital, where the price is often higher than buying a physical copy and even taking infrastructure costs into consideration the markup for the publishers is huge.

The answer is to buy a PC where the longer you have it, the lower the relative total cost of ownership, but that's another story;)

There are mitigating factors as to why PC isn't popular in spite of the lower prices.

    • Not all games will run on it, some people do not want to fork out for a new GFX card or whatever every 6 months to play the latest title at great to maximum graphics without FPS slowdowns. It is impossible to test all PC variations to make sure it works, whereas games for Consoles are mostly tested to perform at a certain level, often without, or very limited FPS slow downs. If you want a graphics card to last a few years (I.E. latest top end card) you are forking out frankly large amounts of money - and you also have to research and find one compatible with your current hardware (there's a video on Youtube from a channel called Mikepreachwow who had an issue like this where he spent a good amount of money and told the story of how much of a nightmare it was to get the 'right' kit, and it not be compatible, can't remember the video name though).
    • Not everyone likes gaming on Keyboards and Mice. I gave up my 360 years and years ago to play WoW, and more recently, LoL. 6 years on and I'm no better at games with a keyboard and I'm shocking on FPS games such as L4D or BF:BC2. I will never be of an average skill on the PC format.
    • Not all games have controller support, however an increasing amount of games do - I play games such as Double Dragon: Neon with the controller.
    • In my case at least, not all my friends can afford to upgrade their PC periodically to keep up with the demands of the latest games, so we all play Xbox One, it's easier all round for us. For me, I just can't be bothered upgrading my PC to keep up, consoles are just more convenient and that's what I grew up with.
That isn't to say I don't play PC games, I do, but I don't play them that often. I mostly have games from Steam that were on sale at stupidly low prices, or F2P games like LoL.
