I live in a large Hindu-centric area so Diwali was in full swing last night. I love fireworks but must admit by 11:30pm it got slightly annoying!

I have one dog who doesn't bat an eyelid with them (he actually likes to watch them, weirdo), but my little rescue dog just sits and shakes in a corner. It's heartbreaking, I'd love to fuss over him but know I can't as it won't help him in the long run.

I just let him sit on / near / under my feet, wherever he feels safest and leave him be. Such a shame as fireworks are great fun but sadly not for pets :(

I wouldn't trust the general public with a 'ball in a cup', but apparently, each year, they're all perfectly safe to run around with small parcels of explosives...

They've haven't started my way yet (well, not that I've heard) but my two older dogs aren't bothered as from when we get them they start being exposed to shotguns going off so fireworks are wee buns for them :) Rua on the other hand still needs to learn about them! Which I'm very grateful for as it must be very distressing to see animals so upset by them.

My Lucy hates them with a passion and goes off her head every year. Got some of that Adaptil spray for this year - the fireworks have already started round here but I'm saving it for the main event.

Hope it helps her. My other dog isn't bothered but Lucy carries on so much he gets stressed about that.

Zara s flat as a pancake under my desk right now - it is about 15 cm off the floor and half of her managed to squeeze under....

Cats - they could not care less BUT they are not happy not to be allowed out in the evenings. Giving me dirty look, no doubt plotting to kill me..

Older dog doesn't bother but I've been training the new pup to ignore them by playing this (and others) several times a day.

Start off with it quiet and over several days increase the volume a bit each time. Don't acknowledge the sound at all, just carry on cleaning or doing something busy. You'll need to use different ones so that the dog doesn't just get used to a certain sequence.

Really does work, in a week pup has gone from hiding in her crate to totally ignoring it and playing with her toys (even though it's now so loud I have to leave the room!)

We had a really loud one go off on our walk tonight and although she stopped and looked concerned a bit, I gave her a treat and she shrugged it off and carried on.
  • Recently had to put one cat down and discovered the remaining twin cat has an enlarged heart/ thickening of the muscle walls/ fast heart beat so will not be taking any chances therefore will be trying Zylkene 75mg on her. But I'm not sure when is the right time to give it to her in feed.

Im very lucky my lot arent fazed by fireworks at all.

The dogs like to sit on the garden bench and watch them and I caught one of my cats Megan sitting on OH's motorbike in the front garden doing the same last night.

I feel sorry for any animals that do get stressed but well done to those of you that are making them your priority this time of year
