re-cold calls on landline

Hi Guys, I'm inundated with cold calls on my house phone, every day, same time, a recorded message asks do want PPi claim, or, new heating etc.
At the end it says, if you want to OPT OUT, press 9, or another digit, depending which company.
Does this work, OR, is it a scam, and I get lumbered with a large phone call charge, as I have read about??
Any advice would be truly appreciated.

I believe, that like opting out of junk email, instead of ignoring, they take it as a response so pester even more.

I am finding that the calls are becoming more frequent (sometimes three a day), but even though I have caller display, I can't not answer all calls, as my GP and the local library both use 'private caller'. I do ignore 'out of area' or peculiar numbers, though (one being our own number).
  • don't press any keys, it may get access for caller to make calls via your phone, at your cost!

Register with the TPS. They have a follow up complaints procedure, if firms still call you, after being told no more wanted..

May be worth asking GP and other trusted callers with withheld no's to dial the release prefix first (1470, then your number..)

If caller ID is 'unavailable', rather than 'withheld', it most likely is from abroad, in which case they cannot get traced/stopped.
(so I was told, when working at a phone co - beats me why, with modern technology!)
Long time away from MSE, been dealing real life stuff..
Sometimes seen lurking on the compers forum :-)
  • Register on TPS, should help future cold-calling. I would shy away from pressing the opt-out option for same reasons you are worried, though I have no idea if its founded or not. Does it say who it is? you may be able to track down a normal number to contact them on.

    Hi Guys, thanks for replies.
    I've been registered with TPS for years, but am getting more calls every day, same people, same time, computer call.TPS are a waste of time, I've reported several in the past, still get them;
Was very dubious about pressing any opt out key, in case it reasons you've both highlighted.
They are both " unavailable " calls.
So just have to keep deleting them from answer machine, as I never pick the phone up to them.
there seems to be a heck of an increase in them, and spam E-mails now.
I had read ages ago of people pressing STOP etc, and getting hit with call charges at £9 ppm, for the call. That's why I posted this.Best place to find anything out.
Technology can be a pain as well as good, sometimes.:D
    much Appreciated.

TPS will only cut the calls down a bit - International, Witheld, and a few UK cowboy outfits will still call. You can complain to TPS and/or OfCom which may, after many years, get some action...

And, as above - don't press anything, best that can happen is you end up on a 'live'/mug caller list.

True Call or Call Blocker .
Many of these UK callers just ignore TPS anyway .

But you really must have a little fun winding up the 'people from Microsoft'.
  • Guess I must be lucky - I have not had a single cold call for three+ years.

Never had one of these - they are the one cold call I'd be happy to have, just to string them along.

    That can't and won't happen.
However, actively pressing any keys in response to the call will certainly mean that there will be more such calls in the future.
