Cancelled Vodaphone contract now debt collector letter

I cancelled my vodaphone contract earlier this year due to poor signal. There was about nine months to run on the contract. I was told by the customer service team that I was required to pay £200 and that would be the end of the matter. I paid this and have not received any further correspondence from Vodaphone until yesterday when I got a letter from a debt collection agency saying I owed just over £3000! I never fell behind with my payments so cannot understand how I owe any money. I have tried ringing Vodaphone but they say since it has been passed to a debt collector they have no further records. The debt collectors only say that they have been asked to collect on behalf of vodaphone and have no details of the debt. What do I do?

Well, it a pretty typical case for shambolic yet arrogant Vodafone. The only way of dealing with them is to record every word and to get everything confirmed in writing or by a e-mail.

Re dealing with debt collectors ask the experts on Debt-Free Wannabe board. I think you can just tell them to !!!! of if they can't provide any proofs.
However, your main concern is your credit history that was most likely routinely trashed by Vodafone. Be prepared to a long fight to make Vodafone clean their mess. Try contacting their web reps that possibly are the only few people capable of doing something sensible in Voda's worthless CS:

As Grumbler stated: your biggest problem is going to be the mess vodafone have done to your credit file. The debt collectors cant do anything other than send you nasty letters. In fact i think there is a 'prove it' letter template on thee boards somewhere.

As things stand you dont have to pay a penny either way. The debt collectors cant prove the debt is valid and if vodafone are saying they dont have any records of the debt anymore its pretty much a case closed as far as a court would be concerned.
