    yes -easily!!

Just checked an my essential bills come to £730. and a salary of £14,400 would give me a take home pay of £1062.

However my essential bills could be lower if I couldn't afford them - would use less oil, would live in a cheaper house etc etc

So that leaves £332 a month.

    £120 for food
    £80 for Car

And that leaves £132 - so save £50 for emergencies and have £82 entertainment fund!

My first job was working for HMRC from which I was paid the princely sum of £11,600. I think I walked out with about £850 a month after tax. I was still living with my mum and dad.

Could I have lived on my own on that kind of income? Probably. Would I have had any enjoyment out of life? Almost certainly not.

I'd be fine on that wage but then (despite my username) i could be happy with just a book case in my house for entertainment.

  • Nope, it wouldn't cover my mortgage.

Why would I want to live on so little money?

I couldn't afford my current outgoings, but if that was all I could earn I would manage.

Dont think anyone would want to live on that amount but the reality for many is they have to live on less.

It's a bit of a silly question really.. Most people adjust their spending to their income. I haven't ever earned that little ever, so my outgoings have never been low enough that I could 'live on £14k'

I'm sure if my income had never risen then my outgoings would never have risen to the level they are now.

No, I would never want to try get by on £14k though

    I've lived on a lot less than £14 400, but I wouldn't recommend it!

A comfortable wage down South would be considerably more than that, possibly even around the £30-40k mark. It's a very expensive part of the country.

It all comes down to your choice of accommodation. You can either pick a one bed flat and have no life, or go for shared accommodation and have enough left for a social life.
