And I certainly hope I am teaching my DS that the only way to progress in life is for him to work too.
Stay at home mums / dads is not a common occurrance in South Africa. In fact very few can afford the luxury.
Sometimes Stay At Home mum/dad is not a luxury but a necessity - you can spend a lot of salary on childcare/wrap around childcare so it is sometimes easier and cheaper for one to focus on family and the other earning the money to pay for it.

I chose not to work when my kids were young, but was lucky that we live where we do and we did not have huge financial demands on us.
We were broke, hiding behind the door broke, but it was worth it for us.
We didn't have foreign holiday, or any holidays for that matter, but we managed.
I think the thing is that we were lucky that we were in a position we could make the choice.
I would hate to be bringing up kids in today's world, I really don't know how folks manage it.
And, my oh is still in the armed forces, and will never be paid enough.
I became a stay at home mum when we had our 3rd, and then I bought another 2 kids home, so we had 5 kids all under the age of 6. So paid work was not an option for me, we sold our house and moved somewhere really small and OH worked him bottom off to keep us. I know I would not have coped if he was in the forces, hats off to you x100
