I applied for supplementary card for my spouse on Tescoplatinum credit card. This was back in July, Bank wanted copies of passport, utility bills etc certified. They sent originals back and said will be intouch, then nothing heard until I called. Apparently they didn't like myspouse's name on the side of the bill and wanted 101 additional documents. Nothappy with council tax bill because it shows initials not the first name indetail. Unfortunately most of these computer systems only capable of limitedcharacters and they put initials. Now Tesco bank wants us to go get diverslicense certified and if no diving license no supplementary card. Which iscosting us time & money. When I asked the complaints team, what if myspouse do not have a driving license? Theresponse was, “in this case we will ask your spouse to change the name”!!! Unbelievable!Totally violation of human rights and which planet does is this bank operatefrom? AMEX and MBNA had no issuesproviding my spouse with a supplementary card even before we were married. Wehave a Barclays platinum joint account and all this evidence such as bankstatements etc none of this is good for Tesco Bank to issue a supplementarycard where I as the main cardholder totally responsible for all liabilities. Ispend over £50,000 with Tesco bank on my credit card. This is absolutely ridicules and totallyunacceptable. Who does Tesco's bank think they are? Bureaucracy, Read tape anddiscrimination & worst UK bank! I spend over £50,000 with Tesco bank on mycredit card annually. If this is what you get for loyalty, I will cancel myplatinum card and take my business elsewhere and will not have anything to dowith Tesco's!!!!

Finally the complaints Team has taken 4 months to look in tothis and extremely disanointed with the attitude and service. As a customer youwill never be humiliated and treated in this manner from AMEX or Barclays. Asking me to change my spouse’s name was absolutelyviolation of human rights and discrimination!

Misunderstanding on the OP's part. If the council tax bill only showed the OH's initials, what they meant was that if they could change the bill so that it showed the full name they would accept it. Call to the council would sort it out.

I wouldn't be shocked if it were :spam: ?

Why would they bother typing all that out if it was just spam?

Their card; their rules - the provision of a secondary card on any account is discretionary as their contract is to provide you with a card.

As regards your 'Human Rights' - I can't wait for the evil Tory party to rescind the Human Rights Act for England. All the dodgy people seem to go there and not want to leave even though they hate the place ;)

Though you'd no doubt love to claim that it does, the Human Rights Act does not cover Tesco points. It's a shame that most people so opposed to the Human Rights Act typically only have a vague notion of "them" using it to "stay in MY country, that "they" hate" (hopefully not the same with you).

You'd think people would care a little bit more about their own rights.

The Human Rights Act is great, problem is that it seems so easy to abused...

Especially when your read in the old red tops stories about some guy who has come to the UK from the Congo and is afraid to go back after being in some militia and mercilessly killing and raping hundreds of people over the space of several years...

You hear more negative stuff because that's what sells papers unfortunately :(

Anyway, back on topic - Clubcard points are a human right? I thought it stopped at Nectar? ;)

It seems a bit odd, to me, that Tesco is being so touchy about a user card issued to a person at the same address as the primary cardholder. It is my understanding that the primary cardholder is responsible for all debt on the card anyway.

I had a similar problem some years ago with the Egg credit card. I just closed the account and went elsewhere.

Why is it odd ? Would you be happy if a credit card issuer gave out cards on your account without any checks first ?

Whilst I accept that checks should be made, Tesco seems to be overly fastidious, to the point of obstruction, in this case.

I have little doubt they are merely seeking to look as though they are exercising due diligence but I suggest the OP dumps the Tesco card and goes elsewhere. He can normally apply for a second user card at the time of the application. Subject to his credit record, I suspect he'll get a user card more quickly and with less fuss than continuing his quest with Tesco.

Yes - if I ask them and they have already checked me.
At the end of the day it's my business as I am responsible for all spending.

Times have changed. ID checks are carried out on authorised users even when requested on a new application. They are where i work anyway, ID procedures have been tightened incredibly in the last couple of years.

Well, all I can say is that I've not seen any evidence in a recent application. I requested a user card for my partner (different surname to mine) at application - no questions asked beyond name, address and relationship to me. Easy peazy.

I think Tesco has just lost the plot of late.

If an applicant can be ID'd electronically then no further ID is needed, but if they can't then more checks are needed. Depends on what information is held already.
