Years ago some makes of cars had a reputation for getting rusty. Are there any cars now that have the same problem?

Cars built in the last 5 years are pretty good for rust and there are few cars with rust problems. Because of this there is no excuse to buy a rusty car as there is a huge choice of cars out there.

If you look at older cars such as Volvos and Saabs that are 10-15 years old the only rust on them are on vulnerable areas such as bonnets and wheelarches. Compare this with my 13 year old Corsa which doesn't have a panel without rust.

Any modern car with rust can be a sign of accident repairs as they often don't rust protext the repaired panels.

depends on the marques, some are galvanised which prevents most rusting but often its just the panels not the 'chassis'
post up what your looking at.
was reading a report on merc E class the other day from 96 onwards with huge subframe rusting issues!! so much the engine can drop out.

Honest John's site has a really good database of car problems, probably compiled from all the emails he gets from the public, if you're considering buying, check out the Car-by-Car breakdown on his site.

A note on badge hunting - I tested a Kia Ceed a few weeks ago (well, I saw it during the ads between CSI - couldn't resist!) and was very impressed with it, though some people wouldn't even consider a lowly Kia :rotfl:

Ford Ka is noted for rusting. Apart from that, modern manufacturing techniques have cured a lot. You certainly don't get them rotting like my Capri did.

wouldn't consider a merc... friends of mine bought a Merc Sprinter van some years ago from new... had nothing but trouble and nearly every panel was showing rust within 2 years! 2 YEARS!!!! And according to Merc? There was no problem, tough luck! It was written off when someone hit it and he went back to Ford...

I was thinking of buying a Ford but I remembered that they used to have a reputation for rusting.

So did Lancias and Fiats which had a habit of only lasting a few years (into single digits) before being scrapped.

If i remember rightly of all the cars that rusted years ago their engines were superb it was just the panels that rotted away, like Datsuns for instance..
The japanese make great engines but the panels seemed to rot away, not sure this is the case now though.
