1 teacher + 6 weeks hols = debt free?

No, I never complain about teachers' holidays either - I wouldn't want to do that job everyday, it's bad enough at home with my own little blighters....
I just wanted to say - try Boots Natural Collection makeup, it's just as good as the expensive stuff but everything is £1.99 or less. I can guarantee no one will ever peer closely at your face and say 'Blimey love, you need to spend more on makeup!' because NO ONE CAN TELL THE DIFFERENCE! Even you! (Sorry to shout but I'm always telling my friends at work this, and they never take the slightest bit of notice)
Good luck with the challenge,:T

Another idea is use the library instead of buying books or mags. You can order the up to date stuff for about 60p, saves me a mint.

Another teacher here. I found this site in the last 6 weeks holidays and it prompted my lightbulb moment. Nearly a year later and there is a tiny glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel.
I used a lot of time last year knocking chunks off debt and making little amounts, simply because I had the time. Some of the things I did...- switched Gas, Elec and phone through U Switch (and got paid to do so threough Quidco)
- joined Quidco and did several free magazine / DVD rentals through them, getting paid to try them out and providing free entertainment through the holidays
- ebayed...lots...teaching books sell particularly well if you have any you don't really use.
- switched to 0% interst credit card
- removed the PPI from my loan
- cancelled eduational magazine subscription (school gets it anyway!)
- closed old credit cards with no balance
- switched bank accounts (to A+L which provides free overdraft for a year and paid £50 to open)
- got my credit record from Experian / Equifax
Lots of it seems to have become second nature rather than an effort and our debts (which were pretty big) have drastically reduced.
Good luck and enjoy the next six weeks (which will fly over!)0 -

Ooh thankyou for all your fabulous ideas! Am raring to go now - It's like the start of the school year when you get all your shiny new books and pens and can't wait to start (or is that just me being sad?) (yes?, thought so).
The tip about the library is a great one, seems so stupid not to have thought of it before. was practically brought up in the local library and devoured the books there as a child but haven't been back since. Always get seduced by the lovely clean shiny ones in Waterstones instead! Will get myself down there first thing on Monday
Thanks for the tip about buying books in tesco and Asda, but Ibuy then anyway ON TOP of the magazines!
Haven't tried Natural collection makeup since I was a kid. Got sucked into the joy of Chanel makeup and the like when I moved to France a few years ago. Know that Bourjois is the same makeup really, but there's just something about that shiny black packaging and the double C's.... And yes i know the idiocy of following brandpower, I used to work in advertising!
Love the idea of signing up to the free DVD offers for cash on Quido as I've got all this spare time to finally watch things!
Have put 8 books on Green Metropolis in the last hour but never used it before - Is it any good or have I just completely wasted an hour of my life?
Off to put some of my beautiful handbags on Ebay, I can do it, I can.
And congrats to all my fellow teachers out there who are reclaiming their sanity and their lives right about now!
Memo to self; I do not need more shoes....::rotfl:0 -
I used to buy books, read them and then sell them on ebay.Suddenly it dawned on me that it's far cheaper, and less hassle to borrow them. Also it doesn't clutter my house up as much.I used to have books piled up all over the place:eek: :eek:petite_anglaise wrote: »Ooh thankyou for all your fabulous ideas! Hello! Interesting to see that there are teachers on here
I'm trying to decide whether or not to do my PGCE next year!
anyway, I find GreenMet very hard going - I've only sold two books on there, and got fed up and removed all the others. But that's just my personal experience. Can you do any carboot sales and get rid of anything that way? or Ebay? Just an idea. Join pigsback (PM if I can refer you to it please!) and Quidco

hi from another teacher. Don't you love Sundays knowing that you can have a lie in on Monday?? :j
I'm not in debt but saving like mad to improve the house. Join Freecycle for giveaway books, I'm still ploughing through the 3 boxes I picked up just after Christmas! Also received plant pots and plants for garden.
My biggest saving is using coupons in my local Tesco. Since 1st September last year I should manage £3,000 savings by this September. Go to discount vouchers thread for help on this.
Good luck

Definitely use the library!!! A teacher not using the library!!! (my whole family are teachers, even if I'm not, so I'm sort of honorary, lol). Seriously, libraries for books, DVDs and magazines, they're ace, they are round here anyway.
Good luck with this personal challenge - it sounds like you've nipped it in the bud before anything's got too far out of hand. Look forward to hearing of your triumphs!2023: the year I get to buy a car0
