Storage Heaters

Have just moved into a flat with nightstorage heaters and i'm throughly confused by them  always had central heating before, there is a time switch on the wall should i be setting this to come on at night during the off-peak time so that the heat can be collected or should i be setting it for when the heat is to transfered to the house to keep us warm. (not an issue at the moment but come winter)

I don't have storage heaters but my Dad does and is pleased with them. I believe that they come on at fixed times - which are not adjustable-so as to benefit from cheaper rates. What is adjustable is the amount of power taken in by the heaters which is later released as heat.
Is your time switch adjustable or is it just showing you when the heaters are being charged?

Its adjustable and i have those two options either its "ON" or the other option is "STY"

I've never had them before we have a double glazed and very well insulted flat so once they are sussed out i'm sure they will be effective but since i've never used them i'm a bit in the dark

Just joined and 3 slightly different posts all promoting this system.

From a quick glance it would appear that these run using daytime electricity rates.

If so there is no more expensive way of heating.

    I suspect this is spam.

My sister has night storage heaters actually she only has one, the previous owner removed the lounge one and replaced with an electric radiator which costs horrendous amounts. The night heater when switched on at the wall automatically heats up at nght and dispenses during the day. I would more detailed information but she has just gone on holiday today.

Are you sure these are storage heaters. I've moved home frequently over the years and have had storage heaters going back over approx 30 years. I've never seen one that has a timer on the wall. The only controls are usually on the heater and they control the amount taken in and the amount given out.

Wall timers I have seen usually control panel heaters which don't store heat, but only give heat out within the time set. I've also seen separate timers with electric underfloor heating - again, this isn't storage.

In fact, electrician was here today replacing time clock which switches our electricity between day and night rate and had stopped on day rate. He said that our storage heaters wouldn't be working either as they only operate when the meter time clock is on night rate.

I agree with Behappy, the time your storage heaters come on and off is set by the electricity supplier, make sure you are on the correct?cheapest tarrif.
The clock is probably for the immersion heater.
Set the storage heaters to about 1/3, turn the boost off, use the heaters as background heating to keep you warm and damp free. If you need more warmth in the living room use a fire. Reduce the setting on the heaters gradually to arrive at a comfortable heat level. We always leave the bedroom one off as we found it got too hot at night.
If you turn the boost on or try to get the living room hot using only the storage heaters you will run up big bills.
Used sensibly they are OK and not too dear oh and they are very safe, no hot surfaces!

Can someone tell me where I'm going wrong with my storage heaters...

Over a 3 months period they cost us an extra £250

I have to admit that they were on most of the time but that is because they weren't instant and during the unbearably cold nights it was torture!!!!

If you run(i.e. have them heating up as opposed to just giving out the stored heat) storage heaters during the day there is no more expensive way of heating.

They are designed to heat up during the 7 hours of nightime electricity on Economy 7(assuming you have this tariff) and release heat during the day.

    See your landlord.
