Too late for the OP, but for anyone else starting out:

I suggest choosing curtains first and then picking out colours for the walls after.
Curtains are usually the larger expense, and you want to make sure you really like them. Paint is cheap by comparison, usually, and sample pots are great for getting the exact shade.

Very good advice. But with the sample pots, paint onto A1 sized sheets of lining paper and not onto the wall - the outline of the squares will show up for EVER unless sanded off! Plus, you can move the sheet around the room to see it in different lights/from different angles.
  • I think they are too wishy-washy to go with such a bold wall.

IMO these colours would go better

If you don't like stripes something else in a different design but similar colour combo would look good.

I quite like these for the purple room

Or these if you want something a little more feminine without being full-on floral

I like those striped ones! They may be the ones :P I shall show these to my OH, though feel like I should get you at the house to help me pick the rest of the finishing touches you're so good lol
I agree with peachyprice - OP's curtains might as well be plain, for all the difference that washed-out pattern makes. Good alternative suggestions for curtains.

What's the budget for the curtains?

Having never had to buy curtains I don't really have a set amount, I knew they were expensive though! I don't understand how people find the right sizes for windows either! Our purple bedroom window is wide but not tall, but a lot of the curtains tend to get bigger in both directions!

I'm looking at wood venetian blinds and I think they would suit your place too/

Adding another colour as you are finding out is hard to get right, you either go plain or risk having to many colours going on, the wood venetians would tie it all together, 2 colours on the walls and the woodfloor and windows.

Aren't they a pain to clean them? every time my mum sees them in a shop she goes "don't get them, pain to clean!"

Thanks all for the replies!

I love the Dunelm Duck Egg songbird curtains and thought they would go perfectly with our newly painted lounge (light blue and cream) but unfortunately the duck egg is verging on green and not really blue at all.

I am also struggling to find curtains and have been taking lining paper samples painted with our colours around the shops with me to try and match accordingly. Think I have finally found some in Asda that will work!

I'd also say that there are lots of different creams as we've found that although we have cream curtains they are now too yellow, hence we are changing to a brighter colour.

Glad to hear I'm not the only one struggling at the moment! Haha I wish they did swatches of the fabrics - I'd even pay a little bit for one just so I could be sure! lol
  • This is not going to be easy so unless you want to repaint the walls you will have to be patient to find curtains that match the wall. One of the most important rules of decorating, always start with the soft furnishings\fabric then you can easily match the wall colour.

Haha I had both those paint colours in the house I've just sold!

The teal room I also had a paler duck egg paint. This was the master bedroom. Curtains and bedding were floral duck egg blue. I felt the teal was masculine enough for it not to look too girly with the floral duck egg.

The fondant room (lounge) I always struggled with and was never happy! I think the colour is quite a 'dead' shade so although I envisaged a little heather and sparkle it never really worked! I had curtains with a cream background and purple and olive green leaf pattern.

Don't know if that helps or not!

I would think they would be a lot easier to clean than the old metal type.

I'm just measuring up for mine but have one of these ready...http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00142K1Z2/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o09_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
  • I would have cream curtains in the bedroom to match the cream walls. Let the feature wall be the feature and have cushions on the bed in a pattern with cream and purple/lilac, or a patterned duvet cover. Same in the lounge taupe curtains to match the taupe walls and teal, taupe and duck egg coloured cushions on the sofa. That way if you get fed up with the feature colours its cheap enough to buy some emulsion and change the feature walls and get a few cushions to match. Also there are so many cushions to choose from including quirky and humourous ones to add abit of personality. I think it would be worth getting a good quality material for the curtains including blackout linings for the bedroom.
We are moving shortly and this is what we are planning to do.
