Curtain colour help!

Hoping it's the right place to post this! No idea where to if it isn't!

My OH and I have bought our first house, we have renovated the whole property and are finally, FINALLY coming close to actually moving in and choosing the final touches to the rooms. We (I say "we" but really it was all me haha) have managed so far in choosing the colours for all the walls and the flooring. I am completely stuck on curtains.

We have feature walls in all our bedrooms. Two I am stuck on with how you are supposed to choose curtain colours. First is our bedroom, picture for illustration; with a closeup of colours too

purple and cream (dulux dusted fondant)

Do we have purple curtains? cream? a different colour? I've tried finding purple and white but not much luck, a lot are floral and it might make it feel more like my room than his too!

Then we have the 2nd bedroom. Teal and Taupe:

do we have teal? taupe? another colour? It's a lot more grey than we had thought too the taupe

I have been stressed about the house, but this is the hardest bit! Hah we are obviously on a budget too which doesn't help!

Sorry for the long post! :p

  • Hi, congratulations on your first home purchase. I was very similar to you, left in charge of all the finishing touches. It's looking good so far though. As for curtain I'd probably go with something similar to the feature wall colour. My bedroom is white and I've got a silver and black wallpapered feature wall, so I've chosen satin black curtains with a stainless steel pole. So on the white wall it makes a contrast. If you can't find a match to the feature wall colour, perhaps find some cushions for your bed that suit your room and get matching curtains something. Good luck

You need either to go with a neutral colour such as offwhite/cream, pale dove grey or taupe - perhaps two tones lighter than the same grey/taupe on the walls,

or pick one of the main strong colours (in this case purple or teal) and use that as the basis of the curtain colour,

or pick out one of the undertones in the main colour (in this case blue or grey) and start with that.

Are you inclined to go for plain, or patterned curtains?

I would go for a white blackout blind inside the recess. It's what I did and now don't have ugly curtains spoiling the look of my window.

The problem with white blinds is that the resulting 'look' can be very clinical/officey. Like a hospital ward. Not really what you want for a bedroom, especially if it is a newish house without much character to begin with. Curtains do not have to be ugly.
  • Thanks for the replies guys. It's so hard to find the same colour as that is on the feature wall, would a blue in general look ok or not? we saw these ones in dunelm yesterday for blue bedroom: http://www.dunelm-mill.com/shop/duck-egg-songbird-eyelet-curtain-collection-188666 but I can't see how these things go together unless they're in the room, I wish they did swatches of these to take home!

I'm open to them being either plain or patterned I'd just be happy for them to look good! We're having blinds in his office (thank god as he chose b&q orange feature wall that'd be a nightmare to find curtains for!) but I don't think I'd feel right with blinds in our rooms, it'd have to be curtains!

Funnily enough I was in a hospital last week and if only the place had looked "clinical". The blinds were, a long time ago, a salmon pink. Now they were grubby just like the walls. But that's another story.

I prefer white walls and to make it homely with pictures, paintings, rugs, and a feature colour on one wall or stencils / decals.

I think they are too wishy-washy to go with such a bold wall.

IMO these colours would go better

If you don't like stripes something else in a different design but similar colour combo would look good.

I quite like these for the purple room

Or these if you want something a little more feminine without being full-on floral

  • I agree with peachyprice - OP's curtains might as well be plain, for all the difference that washed-out pattern makes. Good alternative suggestions for curtains.

What's the budget for the curtains?

I would go for neutral curtains so cream and taupe or similar shades that look nice with your lighter walls. I am not a fan of feature wall colours being picked up on soft furnishings throughout the room and curtains are a pretty big expanse of colour. Let your feature wall be the feature wall instead of spreading it around :)

I'm looking at wood venetian blinds and I think they would suit your place too/

Adding another colour as you are finding out is hard to get right, you either go plain or risk having to many colours going on, the wood venetians would tie it all together, 2 colours on the walls and the woodfloor and windows.
