A 4x4 to me is not just something with 4 wheel drive. It is something that I can drive in almost any weather or across almost any terrain known to man, the X3 falls short on both those categories but it does look nice when dropping the kids/wife off or turning up to work in.

Yes I kind of expected that reply.

A 4x4 is any vehicle that has power supplied to all 4 wheels.

Whether you are happy with its designed purpose and capabilities off-road and/or elsewhere doesn't change the fact it's a 4x4.

You see comments like 'not a real 4x4' every day on the LandZone Freelander forum - that probably doesn't meet your criteria for a 4x4 either.

4x4s don't have to look like Defenders or Willys Jeeps to be any good at what they are designed for.

Just in case you think I'm an x3 fan - personally I wouldn't want one as I bought a set of winter tyres for my e90 and sold my LandRover - didn't need it any more.

So we're back to my question for the OP - Why does he want a 4x4?

The X3 is an SUV. Some of them do have four wheel drive, but then so does a Bugatti Veyron.
  • I said x3 just as an example, the wife has a Mini Countryman and my qq is a lease deal which finishes in a few months. With a 3 year girl I just feel the mini is too small to be classed as a family car if we ever want to go sassy and have to pack things such we do sometimes.
With regards to taxis I don't think I would need it as we live in the city and everything is within 1-2 miles and we have pushbikes

The term "4x4" is banded about so much that most people have forgotten what it actually means, but your definition means the OP could well go out and buy a Fiat Panda.
Understeer is when you hit a wall with the front of your car
Oversteer is when you hit a wall with the back of your car
Horsepower is how fast your car hits the wall
Torque is how far your car sends the wall across the field once you've hit it

So you knew exactly what they meant by it not being a 4x4, and decided to be a pedantic bore anyway?

An X3 is no more referred to as a 4x4 than a subaru imprezza wrx or an audi quattro. It's a car that happens to be four wheel drive.

    Yes.

A Fiat Panda is available in a 4x4 model version - or at least it used to be.

So you knew exactly what they meant by it not being a 4x4, and decided to be a pedantic bore anyway? No!

So therefore by definition it's a 4x4 - just like the Subaru Imprezza and the Audi Quattro you mention.

For God's sake why do you think they have such good road-holding? Do you think they just 'happen' to be four wheel drive?

Four wheel drive is and means 4x4 whether you like it or not.

The term 4x4 has NOTHING to do with off-road ability such as being able to drive across a ploughed field.

It simply means there is drive to all 4 wheels.

But if some of you want to change the meaning of words you can call it a banana if you so wish.

One thing to consider is that with two cars you have a backup if one of them is off the road for any reason. I derive great peace of mind not being dependent on a one and only car.

So you are just a pedantic bore then!

No-one is debating whether these vehicles have four wheel drive or not, the fact is four wheel drive saloon cars and compact/premium suvs are never referred to as '4x4s', regardless of how many times bores like you insist on reminding everyone that they should be due to the drive train they employ.
