Hubby went along with one of these once, completely not realising it was a scam. he even clicked the website which gave them remote access to our computer to prove how 'genuine' they are. he arranged for them to call back when i was home as I deal with all of the finances etc.
when I got home I hit the roof. I asked him how he could be so bloody stupid to allow them remote access etc, they then called back and I gave them a mouthful too.idiots.
We are with tps, but its constant anonymous numbers and so we cant checkk where they are from- they are all indian speaking.
we also persistantly keep getting a phone call asking for 'mrs bird'...each time, I tell them there is no one here of that name and to remove our number, they say 'are you not mrs bird of....'then reel off an address local to me, then they put the phone down whilst I am stating my reply. Next time they call I will tell them I am mrs bird, and see what the hell they want. sick of it!0 -
I hope you uninstalled the software and gave the PC a damn good going over. They could have installed ANYTHING to snoop financial details (e.g. keyloggers).0

They could but I think the usual scam is to get a payment for removing non-existant malware. The trick I've seen described to "prove" there is a problem is to have the user look through the windows event log where there are always various errors shown. Still worth a good scan of course...0

Don't talk to them - if you are willing to listen to what they have to say then they have a reason to call.0 -
I have heard about these Windows calls many times but have never had one. Had assumed that it was due to being ex directory but can't be sure. I like the 'My Computer ' story !0

One call yesterday, I immediately said "what is your telephone number".......he hung up as soon as I got the last word out. At least I didn't get 3 further calls this time. I wonder how well "stay on the line while I trace your call" would work.
I'll be off to Argos to get the caller blocking thing if all else fails, I object to having to spend my hard earned money blocking these pests.
Wow Kezzygirl, I imagine hubby is usually a sensible guy but we can all be a touch daft sometimes, I bet he won't fall for anything like that again though!Seen it all, done it all, can't remember most of it.0 -
Ex-Directory doesn't protect you. I'm ex-directory but got enough nuisance calls to goad me into buying a blocker.I have heard about these Windows calls many times but have never had one. Had assumed that it was due to being ex directory but can't be sure.
They use machine dialers that just go through every possible number. That's what the silent calls are - machine gets an answer but has no available human to connect you to so hangs up.0
