John lewis laptop died 10 days out of warranty

My laptop has been experiencing Issues for about a month, with it suddenly shutting down. I had resolved to rebuild , as in wipe everything and reinstall the os. Unfortunately it seems there was a more serious issue, as today it simply switched itself off and will not turn on again.

The laptop was of purchased from John Lewis just over two years ago. The warranty expired on the 26th September. I contacted jl and they have said I should contact Samsung to get a quote and then come back for a possible contribution towards repair.

Pretty miffed that the laptop decided to die just days after the warranty expired. The laptop was £800 so wasn't a budget model. Any advice on what my rights are? I realise there are vague consumer laws stating goods should last for a reasonable amount of time.

Any advice is appreciated!

They shoukd last a reasonable time as mentioned if its an inherrent fault , but its your responsibility to prove that afer the first 6 months

COntact jl , they are generally pretty good

I had an ebuyer refund 4 years after purchase, I had a proportional refund

You've contacted John Lewis and they've told you what you need to do. They've even said they might contribute to the repair. Sounds very reasonable to me.

Obviously they probably wont contribute if you've damaged it yourself.

Find our how much the repair is, then go back to John Lewis.

No point if it won't boot on main power. Most laptops can operate without the battery in anyway when connected to the mains.

That sounds like an overheating problem?

I agree. The heatsink at the vent will likely be clogged with dust.

Some laptops are easy to take apart to clear out the dust (like mine is); some are utter biatches to do the same.
  • I also think that it's an overheating related problem but if this is the case, cleaning the heatsink and fan is unlikely to help now.
As the laptop won't turn on at all even from cold, the cpu could well be cooked and will also need replacing.

If this is what has happened and a report from Samsung states this, it's doubtful if JL will contribute towards a repair as it will be classed as a user induced fault.
  • Thanks for the replies guys, an it friend who was going to rebuild for me thinks it may be the motherboard. Whichever repair is needed I would guess that it would be expensive and ultimately not worth the cost.

I would definitely argue that the fault is not of my own making. Just a shame it has died so close to the warranty expiring, otherwise I would imagine I would be fully covered.

Well, I will try contacting Samsung tomorrow and see about getting it sent in. Though not sure what if any charges there would be?

Had thought that I would just take it in to jl , and argue the toss that the laptop was showing problems before warranty expired, that the warranty only just expired, and a £800 (1100 full price) should still be working (has never been dropped or exposed to water - pretty much stayed at home it's whole life) .... is this not reasonable?

Catch 22 then. If the OP had opened the laptop to clean it out he may well have been deemed to have "broken the seal" and so breached any warranty terms.

I'm not sure that under SoGA, John Lewis can "contribute" to a repair. If the laptop is inherently faulty, then they can choose to refund (full or partial), replace or repair. If they choose repair, they must cover the full cost of doing so, part of it. Likewise, if they were to give you some money back in the form of a partial refund, it must reflect the value of the laptop minus any use, not a percentage of a repair.

If it's not an inherent fault, e.g. misuse, then none of that applies, and a contribution to a repair is far more than they need to do.
