I find rugosas grow like weeds here, but they are in slightly acidic soil I think. They like a banana skin around the stems and sheep dung.
Raining here & yet another plumber has been to take a look at the system & can't see what's wrong apart from some T pieces.
Was in B & Q yesterday & as they've just had a massive new paint section done with Valsapr etc doesn't look like it's shutting. Wicks always looks dead, but we hear that 1st thing it's really busy as that where the trade go.
No sign of joiner who promised he'd be here, but hasn't arrived. I don't think he's been this year ....maybe a day or two....0 -

.
We are acid - bright blue hydrangeas without cheating.
The rugosas are tough, but they have to be, being introduced into a bank full of bramble and bracken etc. I can have as many as I want. Horse Woman has them around her manege....and they're migrating.....
Heating system sounds more hopeful. Maybe it's something simple after all.0 -
Person plumber been and gone & says he will come back & change some t pieces but not really instilling us with much confidence - why don't people just fess up & say they don't know what is wrong.
Phoned someone else & they said try switching the thermostat right up & see if rads get really hot - if so then thermostat is wrongly wired.
Rads are starting to get really hot! I am so getting fed up with this.............but hope this is all that is needed now is a re wire of thermostat.
I layered the rogusos Dave - well I hoiked them out of a banking where they'ed escaped out of someone's garden - the runners & jabbed them in the ground - stuck a banana skin around it & whacked on some sheep dung - well rotted - they are taking over here, bot white & pink. There are red ones near here, but haven't seen a runner to liberate from that one yet!0 -
Well, that's pretty good news re the heating, choille; that you actually have some...... OK not right yet, but on a par with our setup, where we have no hot water from the boiler as yet.
Plumbers are back next week, but it might be the electrician's fault.
You can bet they'll blame each other! But we owe money to both, so we hold the ace.
Rugosas were popped-in while Mr Dog was away working at whatever he works at, which isn't much these days. I think he'd be much less keen to pull them out than the beech saplings I planted further up the road two years ago, but I'd rather not risk it.
EDIT: I'm late, but I finally lit my Choille Day bonfire today. :j Wind finally in the right direction.0 -
Berberis maybe another addition into the hedge.
We didn't pay all of the 1st plumbers ridiculous bill as it kept increasing even though he hadn't been back, now we just got a debt recovery letter & he's added another £2,000 onto his outstanding amount due. The man's mental.
Trading Standards will be getting a call on Monday as this is beyond a joke.
Winds picking up here & the moon is looking massive out there.0 -

Morning everyone. I am also sorry to hear of the problems with the heating. We have an Aga here that was in when we moved. It's a total indulgence as it doesn't do anything other than cook. It's gas too so costs a fortune, or did until I found a good fixed tariff. It also doesn't really keep the kitchen warm, as the woman who renovated this house was very much about aesthetics (although didn't get that spot on) and not function. But we can't afford a new kitchen and it would be totally wasteful so we will live with it. I do love the Aga but don't get the best use out of it at all. We may need to have a new roof...we have only spent about 3k having it repaired so far to now be told it's the wrong pitch that's why it keeps leaking. Thanks. So if we do I may go the whole hog and move the roof lights so I can have an old fashioned washing pulley above it, that could help.
Anyway, it's rained here again but not cold at all. Going to turn my compost again later and will try to get photos of my bare beds up for you all. I also wonder about my veg patch. It's just a patch of ground, no paths etc. I don't want raised beds as the soil is really good. Do you think I should put some kind of oaths in though and make beds? Or just keep it as one big patch? Hmmmm.0 -

I think it's best to have some sort of path. You could find some cheap paving slabs and just loose lay them, moving them year to year, or you could put down temporary paths of heavy duty polypropylene weed fabric, cut to whatever width you want.
If you create permanent beds, its easier to know where you planted the different crop types and rotation becomes less of a guess.0 -
I will resist the temptation.....:D

what I did at my old house was cut old big carpet in strips, lay down as paths and covered in woodchip.. drained well and looked rather twee0 -
We are going to put up a pulley in the utility as they are handy.
If you alter the pitch of your roof you may need planning, but if it leaks it sounds like a botched job.
The raised beds are handy for no compaction of ground & also if you have a wet climate. I did used to have a big veg patch at a previous location & used a plank to access it, that was easily shifted & would take the wheelbarrow. Again this saved compacting the soil.
Very wet throughout the night, but feels mild. Most of the snow is gone. Can't really be bothered. Must stir myself.0
