  • Ah yes the end of Crimbo Limbo, all systems go tomorrow, because like Dave I am not as far with my planned tasks as I had hoped to be!

We've set 'ourselves' some big tasks for this year, working on the house now the 'farm' is kind of under control...including sorting out our bathroom and fitting the kitchen which currently resides in boxes in one the outbuildings, oh and redecorating everywhere we haven't done yet. Nothing major then!

DH suggested we do the kitchen next time he's home, got to get two layers of tiles off the walls once the units are out, and I said absolutely not, I can cope with a microwave and a kettle set up on top of a fridge in the living room but only if it's just me! he's prone to grouchiness at the best of times so if his leave isn't productive and at least a bit restful it'll be a miserable fortnight, so I'd rather do it on my own!

Alfie, that fireplace is amazing why would anyone take it out? I'd be soooooo tempted to buy it, if 1. I had somewhere for it to go and 2. If I didn't already have 3 wood burners waiting to be fitted!!! It's a bit of an addiction, I wish I lived in the old days when there was a fire lit in every room, but only if someone else was in charge of keeping them alight, I am useless.

Twiglet, nice to hear from you, sorry about the situation you're in. I had a few thoughts...You said the land would be worth more to you than to the present owners, is there any way you could buy it, given the likely increase in your property's value it would bring?

"Agricultural purposes" can be all sorts of things and small parcels (if it is available separately from the 40 acres) are usually pretty desirable because of their scarcity...as you say someone grazing a horse wouldn't benefit from the access across your property but a small self contained paddock with buildings would suit a variety of enterprises, in your part of the world I thought horticultural more than arable or livestock farming (although you can stock a lot of pigs to an acre!)

Seriously though, if someone were to set up a small business there you may end up with a lot more traffic in and out as there's no residence on site. And/or people may then try to justify the need to live on site depending on the enterprise and an ag tied dwelling could follow...it's what I would be on the lookout for as a start up if I could go back and do it all again.

Putting your house up for sale seems a little bit drastic, without knowing what is actually happening. although if someone could buy the land at the same time, a complicated transaction I grant you, they would also benefit from the uplift in value of combining the two and it might make a good investment for someone.

I'm sorry to sound like the harbinger of doom, they're just a few scenarios that crossed my mind, some of them 'worst case' from your perspective I guess. But you know your location best, and if it turns out it's not a very desirable little plot, the chances are you'll be able to rent it for sometime to come.

It's really not nice having things up in the air, I know how unsettling it is, but I've come to the conclusion there's no point worrying about what might happen, just have a plan or two up your sleeve and deal with it if it does!

On a lighter note...did anyone see River Cottage Australia tonight? I think it's new, on More 4, it was interesting, along the same lines as the original but highly polished and much sunnier. Oh and Hugh looks a lot older!

    morning all,

looks as though its a cold frosty morning outside..

back to the mayhem of work today...don't want to go, don't want to be there...

hopefully the builder will be up the ranch this week, finishing off the guttering on part of the house.. so then we can move the scaffolding to another outside wall, to start on the next wall.

    I've been Money Tipped!
    Not here, five degrees.

Wondering if its another year where we might just have a couple of frosts. :(.

The horses have eaten through their patch of grass and I'm trying decided whether to feed hay ( we have not had to yet) or move them on.

I suppose I better try and look at some long term weather forecasts for guidance.

    Belated Happy New Year folks

Had very changeable weather here and in Devon. Either bright and fiercely cold or sodden and warm. Both Christmas and New Year were drear.

Snow here whilst I was away. Not a lot (grass still showing) but did not stop some people trying to sledge.

Got my seeds from the plot shop and some unusual stuff from Brown Envelope Seeds. Was quite impressed; they could not find one lot of seeds, so did not charge and sent a replacement and then found the original variety and sent it at no charge!

Nor here, just dull, and warm for the time of year. A good thing, as we made another hole in the back of the house today.....only to learn later that the window & door people are running late and won't reach us till the 19th. :(

I salute the inventor of the expanding foam stuff! :T It seals up temporary plywood sheeting really well, but we also use it around the proper windows too.

The central heating man, booked to meet us at 09.00 was a no show. Something is wrong, as his wife wasn't available in the office either and they weren't answering their mobiles. :(

Still, Pete proved reliable. :) Came up this afternoon with another trailer and carted the Fayre Queen's one away, filled with tonnes of rubble. He seems quietly confident he can take whatever we give him, so I suspect he's found someone who needs a lot! ;)
