That's great advice maggie.
Used the new second-hand ride-on on Sunday and cut most of the large grass areas in an hour or so.Some of it was 10cm long, but then we've had the 6th warmest January since 1860something.
As usual, we have about 6 jobs on the go; one of them being to remove several tonnes of stones taken out of the first garden we made in about 2013. Then we can plant some more yew, to finish the hedge there and make a proper entrance to the Secret garden. I'll be about 80 by the time that catches up with the rest, but hey-ho! :undecided
Had to cut down a medlar tree in connection with the above job, which was a shame, but we do have 2 more. Still trying to finish cutting down the eucalyptus at the front, but it's too windy. We've more or less finalised a plan for the front garden now, so there shouldn't be another boob like that! They're incredibly messy trees too, shedding bark and other stuff, but if you want to grow firewood......

Thanks Maggie, for those ideas. I'll probably buy the plants as plugs as I haven't got the time for seeds, so I'll be at the mercy of the garden centres.

Very calm day yesterday, so we finally removed the top 3/4 of the eucalyptus without injuring ourselves, though it took 3 attempts for me to get high enough to tie a rope to the top bit, due to my vertigo!:o
The rope was attached to the van before I sawed most of the way through the stem half way up. The van did the rest!
Now I'm down to the bit that's thicker than the saw bar (14").....:(

A little more progress towards our dream of being more self-sufficient with our food. We have fitted a second raised bed and will be spending the weekend filling it with soil and then fitting the tent structure above it to turn it into a mini greenhouse.
We've also moved the potting shed so that it's sitting partially on the gabion cages and is now South facing instead of slightly NE facing (don't ask!). It's so much warmer in the potting shed now and will be more so when the replacement plastic glass arrives.
Now that the potting shed has been moved, we can fit more raised beds in the area it was sat. Hopefully we can get another couple of beds in there before spring arrives!
We're really chuffed with how this is moving along and can't wait to get planting!5.18 kWp PV systems (3.68 E/W & 1.5 E).

Oh dear, another long gap since I was here...
maggie, thank you so much for your comments on the busy main road house, I hadn't even thought about air quality. We viewed the house and it is nice, but the road noise was pretty bad. There's also the possibility of development nearby, which may have a knock-on effect in years to come. We'll probably still end up buying it though :rotfl:
Dave, what a lovely pic of Sam and the pic of your DD and her husband was stunning, although I'm guessing you didn't take that one. Do you ever submit photos to the BBC weather watchers?? I saw a 'Greenfingered Dave' photo on TV the other day but missed what the location was.
alfie, going back a bit, but your Christmas light display was brilliant!!
choille, hope the eye is improving.
dafty, sorry to read about the donkey, they're one of my favourite animals.
lucielle, sorry to read about the pups too, but nice that one survived.
Welcome to pile-o-stone.
It's a beautiful day here today, the calm before the storm...'A watched potato will never chit'...0 -
just a quick pop in
dave.... please be carefull ! I had a call last night from my [nice] sister to say her husband [70] was on a wall pruning a tree with the guy he works for [75] and silly s*d fell off ! well he grabbed a branch to steady himself but it broke !! hes in hosp with a broken hip waiting for an op ......
sun is out , temps very low but NO RAIN ...3 -
Oh I am careful, alfie, and not trusting! The top half of the eucalyptus didn't have my ladder on it and I cut only with a hand saw, not the chain jobbie. It was so still, I could see when the cut started to open, so that's when I got into the van, lurched forward a metre and down she came! Only bad part was that I looked in the wrong mirror and saw nothingThe next bit was more exiting; a side branch about a foot thick which DW was supposed to be pulling away from me, but I've had her pulling before!!!
Yes, that did come down where I'd been standing, but as soon as it moved, I was gone!

While I'd rather have what I'm used to... I'm impressed that they've managed such a big migration with so few issues so far. Mostly it works3 -
