That is what EF's are for. I am trying to get mine up to a good level...but as you can see, it is a slow process. I am intending to always leave a minimum amount in there for if the worst happens...my parents are both mid 80's and live 150 miles away. We know they can't last forever and my mum has a condition already and is in a care home, she has already had 3 major operations and we never know what is round the corner. I want to know that at any given time, I can put fuel in the car and get a hotel if needed...(normally stay with sister, but you never know when and what might happen)
Take care and hope the day goes as well as these things can. x

    Thank you:)

My EF is still at £1000:j and, thanks to patman and this brilliant thread, whenever I've had an emergency I've been able to cope with it and make up the EF savings again afterwards:j

Something that's going to cost as much as the forthcoming funeral expenses would have thrown me into a state of real panic and anxiety a couple of years ago.

Having the security of a savings cushion for all the nasties that life has a habit of throwing at us is a wonderful thing:T

I agree. I am hoping to have ours up to a minimum of £1000 within the next few months. Would like to get a bit more if possible as I am sure there will be expenses at some time that are more than that.

Eh ignore me. I'm not saving for emergency funds anymore.

Don't get disheartened. Keep plodding on and it will happen. Every little penny in the fund is a penny that hasn't had to go on a credit card when there's an emergency so doesn't matter how big or small :)

#225 HAS MADE IT AT LAST!!!!!! £1000!!

This has taken a while as life has happened a few times as it does but at least there has been some money in the fund to cushion it. I have started savings for car repairs, household, clothes, presents and health now so as they build i will have to use my emergency fund less. It will be a work in progress but every little helps.

For those of you who feel it's taking forever don't give up. i have nearly been at FULL more times than i can remember but i kept plodding and it happened eventually. Don't give up, we're all behind you :)

    Hi all
Can I join please? At the moment we don't have anything in an emergency fund. Unexpected events over the past 12 months have proved to us how essential it is. We've now got some recent debts at ridiculously high interest rates due to poor credit rating and lack of savings. Need to pay these debts off ASAP but also need to ensure that should things take a turn for the worse again that we have some funds available.
As of today emergency fund stands at £0/£1000

Whenever I look at my current account I round it down by transferring an amount to my savings, so for instance if the balance is £255.37, I'll transfer the £5.37 to a savings account. Already by doing that I've hit £250 since the turn of the year. It might sound like a mad way of doing it, but little amounts just aren't missed when transferring them like that. Little and often as they say.
