Ants in the house

We've had little black ants in the house for a couple of weeks and then this weekend they found the kitchen and we've had a steady stream of them in and out since then. Does anyone know of any good ways to get rid of them (preferably non-toxic as we have a toddler)?
I've tried putting little trays of vinegar (white malt) near where they are coming in to deter them after someone recommended it but it had no effect, in fact as I was cooking dinner one was walking round and round the tray I'd put on the worktop as if it was actually attracted to it.
There is no obvious source or nest that they are coming from as they are just coming up from under the patio so it would be difficult to target the nest.

I am also having problems with ants in the house at the moment. They seem to be predominantly around the front door and the odd one in the front room. There's no obvious place where they're getting in and I can't find a nest...I will be watching the thread with interest. Hope someone can suggest something that works ?

    Hi

There was a thread on this website about the use of Borex. Click here for details.

The following Exeter Council website also has some good advice. You may try your local council and see if they can help.

    Best of luck.

  • Me too, it must be the time of year for them. I've had the problem on and off for years, they run along the corner between the patio and the house wall, then in the kitchen door. I just squirt the run using ant powder from Cramphorns, it gets rid of them for a while.

I've just noticed the horrible little creatures in my living room, didnt want to use anything toxic with kids and pets around.

My daughter says they use peppermint oil at the kids nursery where she works, no idea if or what it does  but I'm gonna give it a go :)

As soon as I notice ants in my house I spray all around the outside of the house where the outer wall joins the ground with Dethlac. from Wilkinsons. I have found if i spray about 2 inches up the wall and about 2 inches along the slabs at the base of the walls it seems to stop the ants coming in. I have used this for some years and it does seem to work for me.

I think the OP might have to get used to the fact that ants and wasps do love lemon curd.......:rotfl:

I've used something called Nipon in the past.

It's a sort of clear gel, and you put a few drops down along the line where they run. You have to cover it with a small piece of glass or slate and the ants find it. Its like a nectar to them. They take it back to the nest and the nest is destroyed.
