London's public transport - commuting to/from work on the tube

I did a search on tfl route planner from Wanstead Park to Tooting Bec, it came up with this option:
London Overground to Barking
13 mins
c2c to London Fenchurch Street Rail Station
6 mins
Walk to Tower Hill
1 min
tube
District line or Circle line to Monument Underground Station
4 mins
Walk to Bank
6 mins
tube
Northern line to Tooting Bec Underground Station
21 mins
Total 59 minsAccept your past without regret, handle your present with confidence and face your future without fear0 -
Thanks - I have seen this version but I am nowhere near Wanstead Park station for a start and have no direct bus going there. I could walk (about 30 min) but it is via open fields... not tempted

BUT - I can get to District Line/Hammersmith and City reasonably easy by taking a bus o East Ham and that would take me to Monument where I can walk to Bank and take Northern from there so this way perhaps would be an option.
Just checked from my post code to Monument station it says 57 min to 1 hr 5 min
Then checked from Monument to Tooting Bec and it shows 25 minutes.
Then a bus for the final bit or 15 min walk so it still makes 1 hour 45 min each way plus minus
Will try this route if the bus to Manor Park, train to Stratford, Jubilee to London Bridge and Northern to Tooting Bec does not work for me...
Thanks for the suggestion - I live in the sticks

Seems you are completely blind then as the tfl website says it takes 1.20 on average and looking at travelling your route it is on average 1.02 hrs, so not much difference and at least a totally alternative way to get to work because if there is a major issue on your lines, it will sure as hell push your travel time much further than the alternative methodgettingready wrote: »Ok, checked - unless I am completely blind all I see from Leytonstone High Road is a connection to Tooting with 3 changes and taking nearly 2 hours. It would take me around 30 min min to get to Leytonstone High Road from home and then about 30 min to get to work from Tooting so.... unfortunately nope
But thanks0 -

Just looked at this again and time wise it would be about 2 hours (adding buses on each end) - would be bus x2 to get to Leytonstone High Rd, overground, tube, another tube, bus so quite a few changes and more possibilities of something going wrong BUT as an alternative... Hmmmmm
It takes 30 min (and 2 buses) for me to get to Leytonstone High Road.
Ok, done post code to post code to include all journey - several options come up and all show around 1 hour 45 minutes total.
Will try to find something with easier commute from mid January when this contract ends....
For the moment will try all possible options that do not use Central Line at all and with minimum changes.
Thanks everyone xx0 -
I suppose that's why so many people seem to cycle around London, especially during the Summer months it must be a viable alternative.
I started cycling across central London from Kings Cross last summer (without a break for winter).
I feel for the users of the Underground, I used to dislike it when I used it, but now when I infrequently take it my dislike has increased (without suffering delays).
On a bike you're free from the crowds, and that includes walkers with all the fun they bring.
Gets you fit, saves you money, and you generally know (allowing for how traffic lights treat you) how long your journey will be.Toyota - 'Always a better way', avoid buying Toyota.0 -
I envy those who can cycle - I have no sense of direction at all, would probably kill myself or cause an accident just by trying to get out of my own road so unfortunately this is a complete no no for me. Will never learn to drive either. So at a mercy of public transport - just need to find a way to beat it
