Saving Energy - GU10 LED Bulbs, but which ones?
Comments
-
Well, I have had a look, we need 9x GU10 LED's.
We have spotted some in ScrewFix for £4.50 which have a 3year warranty. Its now a cost versus warranty comparison.
We also spotted that we can purchase a E27 to GU10 conversion adaptor from eBay China.. ideal to replace them 40w candle bulbs in the lounge and study.
We have recently moved, and even Mrs AO has moved all the normal energy saving bulbs too.
Now that's moneysaving..

I took all of our energy saving bulbs when we moved, and I have all the incandescent bulbs from this house stored in a cupboard so they can go back in if/when we move again!Alias_Omega wrote: »We have recently moved, and even Mrs AO has moved all the normal energy saving bulbs too.

Eh? You want to replace a spotlight where a 'normal' lightbulb should be? You do know you can buy LED candles for plenty of fitments? With a spotlight you'll just be beaming up at the ceiling! We also spotted that we can purchase a E27 to GU10 conversion adaptor from eBay China.. ideal to replace them 40w candle bulbs in the lounge and study.
Anyway, plenty of recommendations for bulbs that simply 'still work' with no specs on brightness etc or even prices. OP is only replacing 35W halogens, so can afford to go with LEDs around 350Lm - of course if you want brighter, go higher.
Plenty of other recommendations for websites, so here's mine, which I've used plenty before and found to be excellent (formerly energysavingled.com).

Hi,
Thanks for the link, unfortunately the GU10's are a bit more expensive than ScrewFix, who come in at £4.49 with 1 year warranty.
I think even with an adaptor, they are cheaper than a standard candle SBC LED bulb.0 -
OP have u got any dimmers? If do not all dimmers designed for GU10 halogens work with LED.
I second that too much risk buying of eBay. Spend bit more, but get better product.0 -
Alias - did you try Ikea too? You can't just go on price though. A GU10 will give out light in completely the wrong direction (UP) whereas a candle will give out light all around. No idea on the quality of the screwfix ones either, regardless of warranty.0

We have bought led bulbs direct from Hong Kong all work perfectly well and we have seen a saving0

No Dimmers unfortunately. Appears the sellers must have spent all the money on something instead of property repairs, electrical upgrades.
IKEA is miles away from us unfortunately, Mrs AO loves it and we need to keep her away from it.
Hong Kong ~ I guess its horses for courses..if you pay £2 a bulb, and it lasts 1 year, or £4 and it lasts 2 then it equates to the same.0 -

I look at the LED Hut warehouse every time I go and buy LED lamps. Then I turn left and stop at Toolstation across the car park. Much cheaper and good light output too! Their 5W COB GU10's are hard to beat for appearance and they also have a 3 year guarantee.
I've also had some of the cheap Ebay 3 LED lamps - one batch of 4 failed fairly quickly while I've had one failure out of the other batch I bought. I took them apart and found that the LED's themselves still worked but the electronics didn't.0 -
