Well then why would you trust someone who walks in off the street over who you choose to live with?
Assumption fail. Read the OP again.

And in the real world - you don't always have full control over who you share a front door with; who they invite to spend the night or indeed magically know in advance who will or won't be honest.

In the real world, the person dealing with parcel collections has no idea who is in front of them.
You are making a perfect argument for someone sharing an address not being a reasonable reason to hand a package over. Do you see that?
If you cant trust your own address, then dont get the items sent there. RM offer alternatives for that too.

too much hassle here, in future pay ten bob or so and get it delivered to local post office, or cut the phone line, smash mobile with a 2lb hammer and go to the shops.

i see both sides of the argument here,
a genuine punter enters the d/o thinking its a simple job to collect a parcel,
other side of the counter is a royal mail employee who now dare not break wind without fear of a warning due to the management who will jump at a chance to fire someone.

those high up prevent common sense taking place 99% of the time

Waste of time trying to reason with these numpties, Custardy. I wouldn't bother - there is no accounting for stupidity.
