Over charged by Ibis hotel, Liverpool

Sorry if this sounds judgemental, but if you don't have any emergency funds, savings, or access to further cash once your current account is depleted, then that is called 'living hand to mouth', and anyone who is in this situation but willing to shell out £174 for one night's stay in a hotel is really living beyond their means.
OP did have sufficient funds in their current account. However the hotel took/reserved them all. That's not hand to mouth by any means.0 -
I have had something simular happen to me with a different hotel. My friend who works in hotels said its a ghost transaction. Basically they take out a pre-authorization for payment so they are guaranteed that amount and the hotel is then suppose to drop that ghost transaction when you pay. However sometimes they dont drop it, making it appear as if they have charged you twice. When you call your bank they can only see who the money appears to be going to. It normally drops after about 3 days. I have however once got it dropped quicker. I had to get a reference or something from the bank and get this faxed over to the hotel. The hotel then faxed the bank back to tell the bank to drop the pre-authorisation. However the bank can only do this with the instruction from the hotel. I hate when hotels dont drop the ghost transaction as like yourself it can lead you in a tricky situation. Hopefully funds will be back by tomorrow.0

Maybe 'hand to mouth' is a bit strong.
What I'm saying is that if you've only got £383 in the world then it's not a good idea to spend £174 of it on a hotel, because then you've only got £209 in the world, which doesn't really go very far in an emergency, and if something bad happens that ties up £204 of it.. well, you get the point.
If I was that low on cash it'd be panic stations, not splashing out on fancy hotels.0 -

Saturday was end of the month. Chances are the OP would be paid this week.
£383 is not a small amount of money if you are quite close to pay day.0 -

Fair enough, although you can't plan for issues such as this. OP could have had £1740 in the bank, and a mistake cause the hotel put it through a factor of 10 higher...0 -
Blimey. Someone asks a simple question and gives enough info for people to be able to work out what the issue was and explain it. I thought they were really helpful. I've learned something from reading those replies, as 'ghost' transactions were a new concept to me.
Not sure all the 'How much??? For an Ibis??? That was a rubbish decision. Especially when you're so near the breadline. Why didn't you stay somewhere cheaper/better value/put your daughter on a train/manage your money better??' was at all necessary, relevant or kind.
No information's been given about the choice of hotel, location, personal financial position or decisions overall, so I'm not sure anyone's really in a position to judge. I'm pretty sure it wasn't what was asked for by the OP.
Believe me, I'm in favour of a wide-ranging and open discussion on an internet forum usually, and I won''t defend people who post a question but then don't like the answers they're given, when the answers they get are direct responses to the actual question asked, but I think some of the underlying assumptions and related comments on this thread are not really that fair this time.Reason for edit? Presumably because they wanted to.
Using your logic, why would you pay £33 a night when you can sleep in the gutter for free?0 -

That's not even remotely close to the same thing.0
