Saving Money on an Apple Mac

I agree superscaper.
Mac viruses are there, just not quite as common. For many a hacker / virus setter the element of achievement and mass chaos to users is the aim. Of course PC's provide a prime opportunity to develop on previously known exploits and deploy mayhem.
There is antivirus software available for a mac.
As for price, you could use teh educational discount - which they will throw at you pretty much straight away. If you are studying a Higher Education course, then you may be entitled to a bigger saving - this would be based upon the institution being signed up and as someone said: accessing the site from within the college network. If you're holding out for that option, check the college has such affiliation first!
The other option is to buy an apple mac that has been refurbished. It will still come with a years warranty. Putting on the quidco will also help. You'd have to work out which equates to the best bargain, but I think there is more to be saved by buying a refurb.
The added advantage of buying a new mac is that you can also install windows and dual boot with the aid of bootcamp (there is a beta out at the minute though I believe Apple are building it into Leopard anyway - I'm a lil rusty at the min on that)....of course if you wanted to do this - just be wary of all those potential viruses"The future needs a big kiss"0 -
If you're an NHS employee, you can buy the item at the same price as an education discount would give, but you wouldn't get the free 3-year warranty. You might be able to wangle an extra 3% off by going through Quidco, but I'm not sure you'd get that along with a discounted price offer. Unless you want a second-hand one, I think the education discount is the best available, but I'd certainly be interested if someone knows of a better deal.BSC #53 - "Never mistake activity for achievement."

Don't forget the Refurbished items on the Apple Store (http://store.apple.com/Apple/WebObjects/ukstore, then look for 'Special Deals' near the bottom left of the screen - but bear in mind this is only available at the normal store, not the Education one). At time of posting there is a MacBook Pro C2D 15" 2.33GHz for £1149, 33% off the normal price of £1699. It's worth keep visiting as new Refurbished stock (okay, that's an oxymoron...) appears all the time, and usually first on a Wednesday morning. The last but one Black MacBook C2D (the one with the 80GB drive) was on there not so long ago for £749
iPods starting at £34 too (Shuffle v.2 Silver), if anyone's interested...

wherediditallgo, as a NHS employee how do you go about getting the apple discount? My wife works for the NHS so any pointers would be appreciated.0

She needs to register on the NHS Discounts site here. Once she's done that, she just needs to go on the site, then use the drop-down arrow on the "Find a retailer" section on the left-hand side of the page to select Apple (I always use that to find the retailer, as some of the sub-sections don't have all the retailers listed). That page will tell her about the discounts available.
She now needs to go to the Apple site via the NHS Discounts one in order for her purchase to track. To do that, she should scroll down to the bottom of the page & click the link in the "Online" box. She'll be taken to the Apple page, where she can complete her purchase. The discount will be applied & she should see it reflected either in the price shown on the screen or in the final price for her order. Any problems, just let me know. Her biggest one might be when she sees just how many things NHS staff can get discounts on that she didn't know about before now.BSC #53 - "Never mistake activity for achievement."

Cheers wherediditallgo sounds like I've uncovered a gold mine! What size of discounts can you expect from Apple? Is it the same as the education discount approx. 10%?0

I think it's near enough the same price for the equipment. However, you don't get a better warranty than you'd have got paying the undiscounted price, whereas those getting the Education discount apparently get 3 years free.BSC #53 - "Never mistake activity for achievement."

Hi,
Do you know how to enrol on the courses or where I can find more info? Also, how much discount can you get?
Thanks0 -
Just started at Uni. I can confirm that the HE student package is a very reasonable one! Also, you get an extended warrentee so no need for AppleCare. I'll be buying a macbook when the new OSX comes out.
Thanks for all your help!0 -
I thought the new OSX was the one on Apples site now?????0
